John Lowe wed 1780 to Mary Willie
« on: Monday 30 May 05 03:28 BST (UK) »
John Lowe married Elizabeth 1808-1818

He had Zilla 1818, William 1822,and James1827 to Elizabeth

IGI gives John Lowe wed to Elizabeth Trueblood 1815
and Elizabeth Peack 1818.

My John Lowe was married to Mary Willie in 1780  and had Grasham Lowe in 1808. I am guessing he remarried, but to which Elizabeth or both?

I would guess that there are probably between 3 and 5 John Lowes.

1) the one who married at Stamford in 1780
2) the one who was fathering children in Billinghay in the early 1800s (wife Mary) - this one seems to have a brother also fathering in Billinghay around the same time (Thomas).
3) one who married in Stamford in 1815
4) one who married in Liddington in 1818
5) one fathering children in Billinghay in the 1820s (wife Elizabeth).

3) and 4) could perhaps be the same one.
2) and 5) could be the same, or 5) could be a son of 2).

As there were baptisms in Billinghay in 1818, 1822 and 1827 and Stamford in 1816, 1819, 1820 and 1822 (not to mention in Belmesthorpe a mile north of Stamford in 1824, 1826, 1829, 1831 and 1832), I think it's asking an awful lot of John Lowe who was first married nearly 50 years earlier to be the father of all these children in places over 30 miles apart.  The bicycle had not been invented at the time.

John Lowe (45, miller) and Elizabeth (45) were still in Billinghay in 1841 with Charles, James, Edward, Joseph, Ann and John.

HI Geof

If John Lowe was 45 in 1841, he cannot be mine, which means my John Lowe  married Mary Willie in 1780 had William 1803 and Gresham 1808, the remarried in 1815 to Elizabeth Trueblood and had Zilla 1818, William 1822 and James 1827.

Do you have any information on who Gresham Lowe married, he had John 1830 and Mary 1833, so he married 1822-1830.

Would you have anythong that gives John Lowes parents?

Thank you for your help.

Sorry, I have nothing at all on Gresham Lowe (apart from the baptism on IGI).  I see he was one of the Billinghay Lowes.

Now - I have to ask - are you chasing Lowes from Billinghay or Stamford?

If you are interested in the ancestors of John Lowe 1830 Dorrington (son of Gresham Lowe 1808 of Billinghay), where do the Stamford lot come in?  If you really want John Lowes from Stamford, there were a couple baptised there in 1789 and 1790 - they would have been a sensible age to marry Elizabeth in 1815.

I have found Gresham and his family in the 1841 census at Dorrington-

Gresham LOW 30 AgLab
Elizabeth 30
John 10
William 9
Mary 7
Maria 5
James 3
Ann? 8m
all born in Lincs.
Age 30 means 30-34 years.

They were still in Dorrington in 1851, but John had gone.
Gresham LAW 43 AgLab, Billinghay
E 41 DogDike
J (son) 13 Scholar
A (dau) 10 Scholar
J (dau) 8 Scholar
S (dau) 5 Scholar
E (dau) 3
Kids all born in Dorrington.
No forenames given for any family in the village.

I have found the following burial in Dorrington-
26   Apr   1822   John   LOWE   48   Lincs   Dorrington, St James & St John

Perhaps this was Gresham's father, probably born about 1773/4?

It would seem that you need a lookup in the Marriage Index at Lincs Archives to find a more likely John Lowe than the one who married 30 years earlier and 30 miles away if you are to make realistic progress beyond Gresham Lowe.
