John Hemsley Buxted 1796
« on: Monday 29 October 12 12:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello RootsChatters!

I am stuck! I'm looking for info on John Hemsley, b. Buxted 1796, married to Jane (Nikelas???) c1817 Lewes and lived in Brighton 1824 onwards.

I cannot for the life of me find (conclusive) info on his parents. Is he related to Thomas and Lucy (Dicker) from Little Horsted?

Your help would be most appreciated.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Omega,

Tantalising...I had seen the John and Mary connection on The Weald website but had also (stupidly) got sucked in to an ancestry.com entry claiming their child John had died in infancy. That said, if their next son came along soon after, he would most probably ALSO have been John (it seemed to be a trend back then).

I'll certainly follow this up and I appreciate you looking at the index (I didn't know it existed).  :)

Plus, I have found absolutly no records for Jane Nikelas (spelt in various ways). Curiouser and curiouser!

Hello Paul

If you have a lot of Sussex Ancestors ,it maybe worth joining The Sussex Family History Group. You then have access to Baptisums & Burials. It is ongoing. You can also buy the SMI CD from them.

I found this Baptisum.
Jane Maria Nicholas
Baptised at Lewes, All Saints

BORN,30 Apr 1801
Daughter of Charles & Hannah

I will have another look to see if i can find a Burial for John (junior )

Kind Regards

Hello Paul

Having looked on the Census,i think you can scrub round Jane Maria Nicholas.

I will indeed (I'm linked to the Hemsleys and Cottingdon / Cottenhams from Sussex back to 1640 but then again, every Hemsley seems to be!).

Ooh, I wonder if I can link to him via that Jane Nicholas (that sounds much better than Nikelas)?

I have found John's death: Brighton 1866. He's in the Brighton census from 1841 onwards...it's his parentage I've had problems with.

But your info is brilliant, much appreciated.
