City Orphan Home in Glasgow
« on: Monday 29 October 12 14:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone tell me where I should contact to get further information on possible 'inmates' of City Orphan Home, 13-21 James Morrison Street, Glasgow in 1901.  I have tried Quarriers Homes but they say it was nothing to do with them  ???? I have checked the census so I know my GGF was living there but looking for further information on his situation at the time.

Any advice gratefully received :)

Kind regards
Ax

Not easy if you are not local but the main route is likely to hopefully be via poor relief applications and records. Not sure if you have considered that route? These records, where available, are kept at the Mitchell Library and require a personal look up. I believe some of these archives have been moved to other family history archives in Lanarkshire so always good to check in advance where possible.

Hi MonicaL & sancti

Thanks for replying to my post - MonicaL, thankfully I am local so I will contact the Mitchell Library and arrange a visit - I have been putting off my regular visit until I had more to check out but this will now warrant a visit on its own :).

sancti, this information you have linked to is fascinating, I had no idea Victorians/Edwardian were so 'transparent' in their charities, bedtime reading tonight I think  ;)

So much for Quarriers - Rootschatters to the rescue !

Thanks again.
Audrey

A little amendment to Sancti's link provides the report for the year you mention your ancestors being there - 1901

Hi there,

Sorry I know this was years ago however my Grandfather arrived here in 1935 and I was wondering how you got on at the Mitchell Library? Also sancti are there later editions of the publication that you linked to that we could read about the orphan homes circa 1935?

Thanks!
Louise
