James Waddell and Rosetta Bagster ***COMPLETED THANK YOU***
« on: Tuesday 30 October 12 11:25 GMT (UK) »
This couple were married in St Nicholas, Brighton on 11 January 1836.

Is there anyone who has access to the original record and would be kind enough to transcribe it for me please?

Thank you, omega 1

That confirms information that I already suspected.

I was hoping that the original record might have told me the names of the couple's fathers. I think I know who James' father was, but it would have been good to get some confirmation of that. I don't know what Rosetta's maiden surname was, let alone who her father was.

Since this is pre the start of civil registration, there is no chance of a father's name in the record  :(

Was Rosetta born in Sussex at all?  Perhaps her birth place can be pinpointed more accurately from a census entry?

Rosa Bagster is with her cousin John & Jane Lyall and family in Kensington in 1851. She's described as a ward in chancery. she dies in 1853

Thank you, Mabel. Great to have Rosetta's maiden surname, and her burial and will. Much appreciated.

Extraordinary that her daughter should be a ward in chancery at the age of 40 - and I wonder why she wasn't with her mother?

Interesting isn't it, that every answer raises at least two new questions! However Rose isn't related to me so I can live without all the details about her.

Richard Bagster married Rosetta Crowder 30 Nov 1809 in St James' Piccadilly. There is an 1811 directory with a Richard bagster of Piccadillly describing himself as camp equipage maker for HRH the Duke of York

Doing a free search on British Newspaper Archive it looks like Rosa may have eloped to Gretna with a Raymond Newton, newsagent, c1832, after which there was a court case and a commission of lunacy into whether she was fit to marry. She is several times described as granddaughter of the late Alderman Crowder

This is Rosetta's baptism

Rosetta Crowder
Date 1788
Parents     John Crowder & Mary Annabella Crowder
Christchurch, Newgate, London

I would reckon you should be able to go back some way with the Crowders, given their status, eg

John Crowder
Mary Annabella James
Marriage Date:    2 Feb 1788
Parish: St Mary Aldermanbury,     City of London

Alderman Crowder is bringing up quite a lot of hits in the newspaper archive and on google. He seems to have been Lord Mayor of London in 1829, just before his death!
