Sarah Arnold born Mansfield or nearby, about 1822
« on: Tuesday 30 October 12 23:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  does anyone have any information on the birth/ parents of Sarah Arnold, born around 1822/3.  She is very consistent in the census returns that she was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.  She is linked with James Martin by 1846 with whom she has Daniel, resident Union Street, Southwark.  I believe she is on the 1841 census age 19, apparently alone, also living Union Street.  She is with James Martin thereafter and has his children but I can find no record of their marriage.  He was born in Yeovil, Somerset. Her surname is from one of her children's birth certificate.

That baptism looks like a good bet since parents James and Alice are in Southwark in the 1841 and 1851 censuses:

1841 census: Worcester St, St Savior, Southwark, Surrey (HO107/1088, book 4, f 17, p 26)
James Arnold, 39, Hatter, N
Alice Arnold, 38, N
Ann Arnold, 14, Y
Letsy Arnold, 11, Y
William Arnold, 8, Y
George Arnold, 2, Y

1851 census: 5 Grove, St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey (HO107/1558, f 423, p 82)
James Arnold, Head, Mar, 49, Hatter, Derbyshire
Alice Arnold, Wife, Mar, 48, Nottingshamshire
William Arnold, Son, U, 17, Hatter's Apprentice, Southwark
George Arnold, Son, 11, Southwark

Alice was widowed by the 1861 census, when she gives her birthplace as Mansfield.

This is therefore very likely to be her baptism:

Mansfield St Peter and St Paul
baptism 20 Aug 1802 - Alice dau of Richard & Rachel MELLINGS

If you have access to Ancestry.co.uk you can find all the baptisms of Sarah's siblings in their London records.

A big thanks guys. Looks like one of my "walls" may have been demolished.  Can I ask what your sources were for baptism of Sarah & marriages of Arnold-Melling & Wellings-Wressell. Ancestry? If so, I'll have to wait till my next visit to the National Archives (I'm fairly local).  I don't subscribe privately.

Worcester Street (now O'Meara Street) is just adjacent to Union Street.  Another connection :D

Hi

The marriage I found for Richard & Rachel was from the Nottingham Phillimore marriage index and also the Notts FHS CD.

Sorry, another question for Freckneale: why do you think Sarah was baptised under her mother's maiden name, when her parents were apparently married?
