Emmett & Poland family
« on: Wednesday 31 October 12 16:27 GMT (UK) »
I was just wondering if anybody might be able to help me to find any record of the immigration of my 4x great grandfather and his daughters?

He was a man named James Emmett who was born in Liverpool in 1801. He was married to a woman named Mary Gore (born 1796 in Liverpool). They both vanish from Britain after the 1861 census, but I believe that James is on the 1870 US census living in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Presumably Mary had travelled with him to the United States and died there as there is no matching death for her in the UK. So far I have found no record of these two going to or arriving in America.

His eldest daughter, Sarah Emmett (born 1824 in Liverpool), married an Irishman named Bernard Poland (born 1825). Bernard arrived by himself in the United States aboard the John Bright on the 5 January 1861. At some point between the 1861 UK census and 1870 US census his wife and children joined him and they settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut. I have found no record for her or her children arriving. Children were Mary Ann Poland (b.1848), Daniel F. Poland (1849-1928), Charles James Poland (b.1851) and Bernard Poland (b.1854).

James had two other daughters who vanish after the 1861 British census. They were Eliza (born 1832) who used the surnames of Farnell/Farrell and Hewson who had a daughetr called Isabella (born 1855). The other daughter was Elizabeth Emmett (born 1841).

I was hoping that somebody might be able to find some kind of record of James Emmett and his wife and daughters going to teh United States? My guess is that James and the others would have arrived together?

I haven't found their immigration records yet, but I will post facts in case there are clues we can use later.

Bernard, born c1854 England, and his wife Elveria were living in Bridgeport in 1880.  In 1900, they were living in Camden, New Jersey.  He or his wife stated he immigrated in 1863.

In 1910, they did not state when they immigrated.  He died prior to 1920.

Many thanks for the information, my Daniel would be the one born in around 1850.
