Court Records, 1913
« on: Thursday 01 November 12 01:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My relative was a police officer killed in NY in 1913.

The NY Times ran a story saying a someone was manhandling a woman and Officer Patrick J. Cotter got involved and killed.

My father was also in the NYPD, much later,  and he says that the story turned out to be far different than what ran in the papers right after the death.  He can't remember exactly, but he looked up the logs and it turned out to be something like the officer coming upon a gambling ring.

My father tried to get the logs before they were destroyed, but he was too late.

Anyway, there was an arrest made, but I can't find any reference to a trial and conviction or exoneration.  Is there anyway to find out the final disposition of this matter.

Thanks

Cullen

The Rochester Daily Record of December 26th 1914 reports the Court of Appeal reversing a homicide conviction in a case involving an Officer Cotter, but there's no mention of a gambling ring...

It's on the Fulton History website:

http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html

(I did a boolean search on "officer Cotter" and "killed")

Oh, Thank you so much!!!  That was so interesting.

But, if you can bear it, I have another question.

I didn't know what a boolean search was, so I searched that and tried it for myself.  I came up with nothing relavant at all.  I tried it at work and at home, using bing and google.

I typed in Officer cotter, with and without quotes, I tried and and +, is there a setting on my computer thats wonky?

I would really like to learn to do all this myself and be able to assist others rather than asking for help all the time!!!

Gosh you guys must be sick of me!! No, I found the article from your link, but when I went to google itself I couldn't find anything.

Although I am grateful for all the help I get here at rootschat, I am trying to build my skills so that I can no longer be a burden!!  Maybe I can get good enough to help someone else out, as you so kindly did!!

Hmm, when I input the following (exactly as below):

"officer cotter" and "killed"

... to Google, the fulton history link comes up as the seventh item.  When you require something to be searched as a phrase in the exact order you type them, then use quotation marks, hence "officer cotter". The word and is the boolean operator. You'll get different results depending on where you are searching.  There's plenty of advice about boolean searches on the web, eg.:

http://www.internettutorials.net/boolean.asp

Good luck searching!  :)
