At present, I am searching for information on the parentage of John Finlay of Glemona Lodge, Cushendun, flax merchant, and other possible children of John and his wife, Harriet Lepper.
Here is what I have put together so far:
1. Mr Finlay (given name?) m. a Miss Robinson, an only dau. A grandson in letter said that she was from
Bellroy (possibly Beltoy), near Banbridge and that she had seven brothers.
2. John Finlay of Glenmona Lodge, Cushendun, flax merchant. , (c. 1835-1907); m. 1 Annie (Hill?) , d. 1876 at Donegall Square, Belfast; m. 2 in 1877 to her niece, Harriet Elizabeth Lepper, (c. 1853-1907), dau of William Harper Lepper by his wife, Mary Macaulay. Mary Macaulay's mother was a Hill twice over as her parents were George Hill and Mary Hill, cousins, of the family of Hillmount, Larne. In 1895 John Finlay filed a petition for bankruptcy and according to his son, lost everything. In 1901 John and Harriet were living at 8 Cushendun, Cushlake, Co. Antrim.
3. Walter Finlay, b. abt. 1879; in 1911 living at 8 Sleans, Cushendall; Occupation, labourer.
3. Maurice Finlay, b. abt. 1882; in 1911 living at 7 Sleans, next door to his brother; occupation, fisherman; married to Elizabeth with the following issue,
4. Hester Finlay, b. abt. 1908
4. Hugh Finlay, b. abt. 1909
4. Harriet Finlay, b. abt. 1910
2. William Finlay, no information on him at this time.
I believe that John may have been a relation of Alexander Finlay, Esq. of Belfast, as some of his daughters were related through marriage to the Lepper family, but as of yet this is only a hypothesis. Any feedback most welcome.
