66th Regiment on St Helena
« on: Thursday 01 November 12 23:51 GMT (UK) »
Someone in the USA was enquiring about Nathanial Bates who served in the 66th regiment helping to guard Napoleon. I was not able to post a reply and hope this makes contact.

He enlisted 17th August 1815 with regimental number 60.
He was discharged tp pension 31st March 1836

Would be very interested to hear anything of his experiences with the 66th

Regimental numbers were introduced c1829. So he was the 60th most senior member of the regiment when they were introduced.

Thanks for the response Purley. I just happened to check back on the site so pardon the delay in responding. My ancestor Nathaniel Bate served with the 66th. for 22yrs. He was a member of the British Garrison on St. Helena, and from there went on to Quebec to serve at the Citadel. While there he and his wife bore the first British child, (Nathaniel), born at the Citadel in 1827. From there he went on to serve at Fort Henry in Kingston, Ontario, where he was the Adjutant of the Fort. While there he and his wife again gave birth to the first child born at Fort Henry, that child was Christened "Fort Henry Bate", his birth was quite a big deal at the Fort, and the baby was given a sum of money donated by the troops at the Fort. Following his discharge from the regular Army Nathaniel helped to organize the 2nd. Frontenac Militia to help defend Kingston during the Canadian Rebellion of 1837-38. I know that in 1837 he filed for a Crown Land Grant of 300 acres and signed the application as Nathaniel Bate, Innkeeper, Stuartsville. At this point I lose track of him and have been unable to find any additional information about his very interesting life, or that of the child, "Fort Henry Bate".

Hi. This is my first time using the forum, so I hope I'm doing it right.

I'm looking for info on my great x 4 grandfather, William Weller. He arrived in St Helena in around 1820 and with the 1822 muster roll served under Captain Sampson. In 1822 he married Mary Burnham Alesworth and they had three children: Elizabeth Hurry Weller, James Robert Weller and Joshua Weller. Mary Burnham Alesworth died in 1844 and William then married Louisa Roberts. William died in 1846 on St Helena.

Before William Weller arrived on St Helena,he went to India in 1815 on board the Beaucephalus \Bucephalus and was with the 66th Regiment of Foot. Before the war he was a labourer. His estimated birth on that record is 1786. This info was given to me by the British and Asian studies.

I'm trying to find when and where William Weller was born, who his parents and siblings are.

If anyone can help, I would be ecstatic and greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

it might be better if you started a new post rather than tagging
