Foxborough, Langley 1911
« on: Tuesday 06 November 12 14:05 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out any information concerning the above address or the people who lived there in 1911- according to the Census it was occupied by Francis Joseph Cox and his wife Louisa- Francis was a retired wholesale milk contractor. They had a servant working for them called Caroline Edith Piggott.

Caroline and her sister Phoebe were born in Langley, Berks. Both girls were in service in the Berkshire area in 1901 with different employers.

Caroline' sister Phoebe married in Hampshire in 1907 but in 1918 she and her husband moved to Stuminster Marshall in Dorset where her husband had a new job working for as a stoker for the  milk factory (Bailey Gate)- the milk factory built 2 houses for its workers and Phoebe and her husband Willie had one of these houses- and curiously called the house Foxborough!

There are various queries/brick walls here- we have never worked out how Caroline's sister came to move from the Langley area where they were born- to Hampshire to marry in 1907; Phoebe's husband was nothing to do with the milk industry till he took the job in 1918 at Bailey Gate ; Why they called their new home in Dorset 'Foxborough' whilst Phoebe's younger sister Caroline was in service at a house of the same name in Langley!

There is clearly a link here with the house names - and the fact that Caroline's emplyer and Phoebe's husband were in the milk industry- albeit at different ends of the scale!

Any information, no matter how insignificant, in respect of Foxborough, Langley - and Francis Joseph Cox (aged 49 and retired in 1911) would be really appreciated!

Was Phoebes husband William Fall?
I can see he was born Hampshire so that could explain why they married there.

The milk jobs just coincidence I would say.

Is it clear it was them who named the cottage rather than the employer?

In 1901 Francis - no occupation and Louisa live Foxborough Villa next door is Foxborough Lodge.

The other side is Richmond Villas Bath Road.

Possible marriage in Kensington  :-\ 1885 Louisa Pocock.  Death for Francis 1939 Surrey.  Louisa 1942 Surrey.
If this is the right couple.  Marriage year is right for 25 years married in 1911.

Thank you for your replies.
In response- yes Phoebe married Willie Fall but still can't work out what took Phoebe from Langley to Christchurch (have spent 7 years trying to work it out!1).

Foxborough- I do not know if the dairy gave the house the name or Willie and Phoebe gave the house the name- sorry!
Thank you all anyway- it has given me food for thought!

s it possible to find Francis and his wife in 1891?

James and Sarah Piggot- trust me, I have traced the family plus all the siblings through every census from birth to death- and have looked at every member of the family sideways and inside out!!
It was this most recent revelation from the 1911 Census that set me wondering if there was a connection between one sister being in service to a retired milk wholesaler at Foxborough in Langley and the other sister married to Willie Fall who moved the family from Hampshire to Dorset to start work as a stoker at a milk factory in 1918- coupled with the fact that the house they were given to live in was called Foxborough- now I don't know if the Milk factory named the house or if they were given the chance to name the house? The house is still there today and is still called Foxborough!
Really don't want everyone wasting their time looking at info I have already found out1
I wondered if there would be anything in old newspapres or trade gazettes that might give me some info either about Francis Cox and his dealings as a milk wholesaler- might he have had connections with the Bailey gate Milk Factory- which changed hands in 1916.

Just thinking outside of the box!

The reason I asked was that Sarah (mother of Emily Sarah, Ab Charles, Phoebe Jane and Caroline) is a widow  in 1891, She is also stated as Sarah Piggott Widr in 1881 which was before the birth of Phoebe & Caroline.  :-\

Re Phoebe - what took her from Langley to Christchurch was her husband  :D  He was born in Bournemouth and who wouldn't choose to live by the seaside!

Not sure Francis is going to give much help to be honest but let's give him a chance  :)

The story of her husband has been another very tangled web- just don't ask!!!! Clutching at straws I know with the Foxborough link but worth a try!
