Codford and Chitterne WHATLEY
« on: Friday 09 November 12 22:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am seeking parish record mentions of the WHATLEY family,William born Codford about 1806 married Mary Maidment 1826, removal order to Chitterne 1827, 9 children born there some of whom moved to south Wales in the 1860s.

I am trying to find out who William's parents and grandparents were and any siblings and where the family originated from. I think parish records are held in Swindon?

I would really appreciate any help/advice/look-ups thanks

Hi, Thank you so much for the information, yes they did marry. The ceremony took place on the 14th May 1826 at the parish church of Sixpenny Handley, Dorset. William was staying at Ebbesbourne at the time, so I assume that banns had to be read in both parishes.
There is of course no mention of his parents in the records, so I am stuck, it seems to have been quite a common name in the area at the time.
thanks again

A William Watley (sic) was baptised 0n 28 Jan 1804 @ Donhead St Andrew. Parents John & Peggy.
A William Whatley was baptised on 22/12/1800 @ Teffont Evias. Mother Mary " base born"
Both locations not to distant from Codford. No Whatley (or variants) baptisms found for Codford 1795 -1808 but perhaps not yet on line.

Hi,
Thanks for the information, the first one William Watley bap 28/1/1804 sounds promising. The second probably too early but I will keep a note of if just in case. William did name two of his daughters Mary and Maria so that could be a clue.
thanks again
