house history Eastwood
« on: Sunday 11 November 12 15:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm hoping to make a scrapebook for a family member who lives in to a beautiful old house by the canal at eastwood,
I believe that a man called Benjamin newton lived there in the 1800's. they think it was built between 1800-1850 and they know they name has been change in recent years but don't know what it was before.

I'm looking for any info or maps etc ideas where to look thanks, gonna take a trip to archives but don't know where to start.

Helen.

Hi Helen, if you Google Loscoe Wharf, Eastwood there are a few pages. It was on the canal next to the railway station where the big roundabout is near B & Q now. You may be able to find something on the history sites or picture the past.

I think I have seen information/pics in an Eastwood Local History book -but I cannot bring them to hand at the moment

Did the house used to be inhabited by the Dunstan family? 1950's??

Hi
Thanks for all that we do know  that Benjamin was employed by celeb Slater and believe that the two houses belonged to the skaters who owned ropewalk farm, unsure of location, I found a few sentences in a book. John Slater took over the business when his father died.

I don't know who lived in the house previous, there its an old picture of the house which did have a glass house on the side, seemed a bit posh for a workers cottage even if he was the Forman??

In the book "Around Old Eastwood - Published 1991 by Eastwood Historical Society there is a picture of Caleb Slater with a small child on his knee - the description reads "Ropemaking was established in Eastwood before 1819 and there was a considerable demand for the product in an area where the main occupations were mining and agriculture. Caleb Slater died in 1877 and is buried in Eastwood Churchyard with his wife Elizabeth. The Ordnance Survey map of 1890 clearly shows the Ropehouse, stables, outbuildings and the Rope Walk itself situated between the Nottingham and Erewash Canals at Bailey Grove."
There is also a copy of an account dated 29 Oct 1829 and  submitted to Caleb Slater for the purchase of Polish Hemp from Richard Terry & Sons of Hull
The bill totals £70 16s (of which 2s was for "Labourage)
