COMPLETED Ordering Certificates
« on: Tuesday 13 November 12 22:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I want to order a birth certificate for my Gt Gt Grandmother (or I think it is) I have tried to fill out the form online but it needs the Address of the  mother and also the fathers details.  Trouble is I don't know the address and the child was illegitimate so no father.  What to I need to do to get a copy of the birth certificate.

If you are content with just a photocopy, I suggest you order it from GRO Roscommon. Look the birth up on the familysearch site, and note the place, year, quarter (if there is one), volume and page number.

Go to the GRO Roscommon website: www.groireland.ie/  Download the application form you need. Put the location, year, quarter (if one is shown), Volume & page number on the lines for date and place of the event etc. Don’t worry if you have to leave some boxes blank, eg PPS number. Be sure to tick the box marked photocopy. You then either fax or post the form off (there is no e-mail option for certs pre 1.1.1922). Their turnaround time is 7 to 10 days plus however long the post takes. It should cost €4.

Thank you.

Photocopy is more than enough and  €4 is far better than £14 that I was looking at

Question though! Are Northern Irish records held in ROI?  curious why I pay Euro rather than Sterling?

Northern Irish BDM records up to 31.12.1921 are kept in ROI as well as in Belfast. From 1.1.1922 onwards you have to go to GRONI. GRONI offer a very good service but don't offer the photocopy option. So you will save money by using GRO Roscommon. (You pay in euros because it's in the ROI).
