David Bevan b.1896

Hello

I am researching the above - a great uncle of mine. He was born 27 April 1896 in Cwmnantyrwch Aberdare to William Bevan & Martha Herbert - I have a copy of his birth cert.

I have lost all track of him after 1911 at which time he was a coalminer/ hewer aged 13(15) & living at 13 Graig Rd Ynyshir.

Family stories suggest that he may have joined the armed services but was underage, found out & returned home.

I have lots of questions but very few answers

Is it possible to establish which mine he worked at?
What was the minimum age for working underground in the early 1900's?
Is it possible to establish which regiment he may have joined?
What was the minimum enlistment age say between 1911 & 1915? - were records kept of those who enlisted underage?

I am also trying to find out who he married .... but there were quite a few David Bevans to choose from

Any info appreciated.

An Act in 1900 raised the minimum age for underground working to 13 (from 10 yrs old)

Re WWI: To enlist and fight abroad, you had to be nineteen or over. If you were eighteen, you could enlist but you had to remain in the UK until you were nineteen before being posted abroad. No one could join the army under the age of eighteen.

If David's dob was as given he would have been 18 at the outbreak of war

Maybe he thought that life in the forces was going to be preferable to life underground.

Shocking isnt it - the minimum ages for going underground ......

think those ages given for WW1 may have been peacetime regulations. Conscription in 1916 called up those who were 18 on the 2/11/1915.

I'm not sure that proof was asked for. The birth of one of my relatives was registered march qtr 1898. He was killed at Mametz Wood 7/7/1916.

There is a death of David Bevan, age 77, in 1973 (Jul-Sep quarter).
Pontypridd volume 8b page 2243

which gives 27th April 1896 as date of birth
