My Great Grandmother had the name Southeron before she was married, I'm just wondering what is the origin of the name?...she came to Australia probably late 1800's

Hi Lucas

A rather belated welcome to Rootschat.  I am going to move your post to the common room where it is more likely to be seen by others who just may be able to help.

Best wishes

Hi

A variant spelling of Southeron, Sotheron, was one of the early family names in the parish of Stranton in NE England. After various local government changes Stranton is to-day part of Hartlepool.

Of course the name may have arisen elsewhere especially if it means as it sounds - "from the south"

Hope this helps

it actually seems from some research it might of been a Norman name as it was originally le Sotheron... also I came across a French surname site and it actually had Sotheron on it as a French surname... not sure though

Again, sorry for the delay in responding, I've only just seen the thread.

I have found a family member who married into the Southerons in South Shields, (then Co Durham) , especially in the Harton and Westoe areas. If these are yours, I'd recommend the South Tyneside record office who have an excellent on-line service.

They have been variously recorded as Southern and Sutheron over the last 200 years, but there appear to be living Southerons still in the area.

Just to mess things up; There's a very well known enclave of that name in Portsmouth, Hampshire  ;) Been there, I'd think, at least the better part of a century. Don't know where that leads us. But, there it is.

I do believe I also noted the name occurring in Hull. Wouldn't honestly like to swear to the exact spelling, in either case, now. Except that it was identical in both localities.

I guess the message here is Don't get bogged down and restrict yeself to one place ....?

Good luck. And have fun hunting them  :)

CURTIS (Portsmouth & 1800's Berkshire).

HUNTLEY (Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, 'Surroundings')

My name is Southeron, my Father William Leonard Southeron was born in Harrogate, however his parents Andrew & Eva Southeron, lived in South Shields.  We are unaware of any other Southeron from the North East Area.  I am currently researching my family tree so any more info on Southeron would be a great help.

Welcome to Rootschat tasoutheron,

What sort of info do you require?
Are you looking for other Southeron Families or wish to follow your line back?

From what I have found Andrew was born c 1894 to JAMES WILLIAM (1856) and ELIZABETH ANN nee BELL
1911 Andrew was a Ships Fitter Apprentice.
Married Eva MORRELL 1937
Died 1955 age 60

James William was the Son of JAMES and CATHERINE nee STOKOE married 1850.
Catherine is a Widow by 1861 Census
(1851 she is in North Shields, Northumberland, under Southern with a unnamed 2 day old Baby, Master Mariners Wife)

Marriage;
19 January 1850, St Hildas Church, South Shields, Durham
James SOUTHERN, Father WILLIAM Southern
Catherine STOKOR, Father SAMUEL Stokor
(Source Familysearch.Org)

Do you have all of this info and or/do you require details and Census info?

Trish :)
