What Irish government records office or archives has big collections of family papers and one can search for the papers of a particular family online?

National Library, National Archives, local authority libraries/archives, universities and a host of privately funded entities... NUI Maynooth/OPW have a research centre at Castletown House in Kildare. PRONI has a lot of family collections that relate to the Republic of Ireland and you're going to find family collections in the UK as well.

Are you looking for something in particular?

Thanks.  I did just find a good bit there, but not the personal papers.  I'm interested specifically in identifying land/ rental agents of Lord Charles Loftus Tottenham, who lived from 1838 to 1887, and I'm interested in the period from 1870 to 1881.   I'm specifically looking for a Henry Nathaniel Lowe of Enniskillen.    What I found is alot of summaries and discussions ABOUT the library's holdings of Tottenham papers, and alot of pedigrees, and a few other documents of some Tottenham I've never heard of.  Also unclear if they have anything as recently as the 1870's.

Maybe someone who understands their system better could tell me if they have any papers of Lord Charles Loftus Tottenham from 1870 to 1881 that would specifically identify those who were taking rents from the tenants, which I understand is much of what my ancestor did.

Yours,
Dora Smith

I'd be careful of that oocities site, though.   One, it's not where I had my geocities site, so it's a copy, and the site could be infected with viruses.

Second, it's many years out of date.  Geocities shut down years ago.  Atleast the paid part did.    I now have my genealogical data on a Rootsweb free site, and in World Connect.

There is info online about Arthur Loftus Tottenham who owned land in Fermanagh and has the same birth and death dates you've given for Lord Charles Loftus Tottenham. SOrry to ask but are the details in your post correct?

Hi villandra
I had a look at the website noted below..............search "Henry Lowe" with the quotes, in the Phrase Box, select dated 1869 to 1882 and Publication place Belfast  then Publication title Belfast Newsletter. There are several reports on  Henry Lowe from Co Fermanagh(Enniskillen).  Belfast Newspaper Archive will have either hard copy or 35mm film. Also the Linenhall Library in Belfast also have copies but I suspect only on film. Other than that its pay to view on the website.
