Matthew Wilson missing 1881
« on: Sunday 25 November 12 19:16 GMT (UK) »
Cannot find him at all on the 1881 census, can i have a fresh pair of eyes to look, please.

Matthew Wilson b abt 1854 in Girton, nottinghamshire.
Parents John and Elizabeth
Found on 1861 census with parents in Girton, Notts
1871 census he's working at The Plough as a groom in Normanton on the Wolds,
In 1882 he marries Annie Maria Durant in Ancaster, Lincs
In 1891, 1901 and 1911 he's living in Lincoln and lives at the same address until his death in 1929.
I have to assume that the record has been transcribed incorrectly, but have tried all the combinations i can think of, nothing is coming up for his birthplace of Girton either.
Would some kind rootschatter please see if they have more success than me to find him.
Thanks in advance
Jo

The household consisted of the Rector and 4 servants, so in all likelihood it was the Rector who filled in the census return.  Perhaps he just had a senior moment (or always called his groom Walter, whatever his real name was!)

Here's another theory...... many employers demanded that their domestic employees be single, so maybe Matthew was working there under a different name, pretending to be single ?  If he'd said he was married, he may have been sacked ?

Good idea Nick, but he didn't marry until August 1882. Whether he had a family when he was here is another matter!!

Hi Jo,

I have just come across Matthew in relation to my research on the Wilson family in Girton.  I cannot help regarding his later life but I do know a bit about his family if this helps.

His father John was born in Bicker, Lincolnshire c1818.  John's parents were Thomas Wilson and Mary Wittington who married in Bicker on 28/04/1818.  Mary was definitely born there c1799 but I'm not sure about John although he is shown as "of this parish" when he married.  They had a second son William in 1821 but he died aged 10 months.  He was born in Bicker but died in Girton so this dates the family move to Nottinghamshire quite well.  The third son, Thomas (my ancestor) was born in Girton in 1823.

Matthew mother was Elizabeth Walker from Farndon.

You may know all this already so apologies if that is the case.  I am particularly keen to find out where Thomas Snr. originated from.  It seems odd that the whole family moved to the tiny hamlet of Girton.  There were some Wilson' already in the area and I wonder if Thomas was originally from there!

Hope this is useful.

Ian
