Looking for a Marriage for Edith Dyer
« on: Monday 26 November 12 21:28 GMT (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can help with this please?

Edith Dyer was born in Tottenham in 1887. Her parents were William and Ellen Dyer, (Nee Hamilton).

On the 1911 Census she is living in Seven Sisters Road with her mother Ellen and brother William Dyer.

I've looked, but I can't find a Marriage or Death Entry for her...

Any help welcomed!

Cheers, Romilly.

Are you certain you have the correct Edith ?

Or are there 2 Edith Dyers of similar age with parents William & Ellen??

1901  gives Ellen Dyer as b Bexley Heath Kent
living in Tottenham

Possibly she was b 1886

This looks likely for a birth reg
Edith Dyer
Dec qtr 1886
Dartford
2a 44_

Bexley is within Dartford registration district

can't find a definate marriage or death for her - did they stay in Tottenham - did brother William marry -if so where?

Where did mother Ellen die?/

Hi Suz,

Many thanks for looking for me. Yes, Edith was born in Bexley Heath and lived in Tottenham. (I spent so long looking I got them mixed up:-)
I don't think William Dyer the younger ever married. Family rumour has it that he died in Australia. Possibly he re-joined the army, - he served during the Boer War. I believe that Ellen died during the early 1930's, - but I haven't found a definate death.
Possibly Edith never married. So many young men died in WW1 that many women of her age never had the opportunity of marriage. Certainly her sister Rose Alice Dyer, who lived to 100yrs, never married.
Cheers, Romilly.

Just re-visiting this research...

I've now found definate Deaths for William and Ellen Dyer; William in 1909 and Ellen in 1927.

However, I'm still unable to find a Marriage or Death Entry for Edith Dyer, born Bexley, Kent in the Oct/Nov/Dec Quarter of 1886...

Romilly ???

Hi Romilly:

I'm wondering if you ever found the younger William after the 1911 census?

If he emigrated, its possible that Edith went at the same time.

Hi sami,

Yes, - that's certainly a possibility.

William Dyer, born 1881 Served in the Army during the Boer War, and then worked as a bricklayer and Labourer. Family anecdotes say that he went to Australia and died there, but my cousin in Western Australia has never been able to find anything on him.

I did find a William Dyer, Labourer, sailing to Canada, on the Shipping Lists on FindMyPast, but I'm not sure if it's the right one.

Romilly.

I've also looked on FindMyPast and there are certainly a lot of William Dyers to choose from!

However, there was one that caught my eye:

Wm Dyer, 29, single, Bricksetter
departure from Liverpool 2 May 1911
destination Boston, USA
'Ivernia' Cunard Steamship Line

Edith was not on that voyage, so its just a thought.

Thanks for looking Sami, - that's certainly a possibility.

And if it is him, - he could always have gone ahead, and Edith, (if she did go) could have followed once he had found somewhere to live.
