Andrew Dowie
« on: Thursday 29 November 12 06:57 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to identify the wfe of Andrew Dowie - her name, date/place of mariage, and her death.

Andrew Dowie was born Edinburgh 1773. Appenticed as a printer. Enlisted 42nd Regiment 1792, served overseas in Flanders, Mediteranean, Egypt, 1793-1802. Returned home 1802. Reenlisted 21st Regiment 1803, then served Ireland 1803-5, back to England 1805-1806, then to Italy 1806-1814, to America 1814-1815, West Indies 1815, then back home 1815 and discharged, then resumed his trade as a printer. Died Glasgow 1848. They had 14 children according to a newspaper biogaphy in 1845, his wife accompanying him on his army travels.

I am a descendent of their son Andrew (jnr) born Sicily 1812.

I have never been able to identify his wife and when/where married.

Hi ,

Do you have Andrew on the 1841 Census ?
FreeCEN has an Andrew Dowie age 65 printer journeyman , Edinburgh , in 1841.
(Although it states he was born outside Census County)

Hi

Think I was typing this as ev posted.

In 1841, he is in Edinburgh, living with:

Janet Dowie, shoebinder, aged 30 (-34), b Scotland
Jean Dowie, shoebinder, aged 20 (-24), b. Scotland England (see my next post)
Margret Dowie, shoebinder, aged 15 (-19), b. Midlothian
Janet Gunn, aged 2 months, b. Midlothian

Whether Janet is his wife (maybe 2nd, given age) is not clear  as no relationships are given on the 1841 census.

There is a baptism ( 6th March 1824)in  St Cuthbert, Edinburgh, for a Margaret Dowie, daughter of Andrew Dowie, printer, and Janet Gillespie, his spouse.

What a full military life Andrew Dowie had  :)

There is this, from google books, which is a futher summary of what you included in your first post,  kglm - www.rootschat.com/links/0se2/  In this link, it mentions his wife (his faithfull companion "in arms")....still survives.

Hi Again

I've been looking at the 1841 entry and find that Jean (20-24) was born outwith Scotland, so an error in my transcription - sorry  :-[

It looks like an E (England)  but can't quite decide. I've attached a snip.

Brevitas, with what you have found regarding possible name for wife of Janet Gillespie...

She showed as still alive in 1845 with that mention linked above...and there is a death/burial which might fit in Glasgow for her on 19 Nov. 1846, except this shows as 66 yr old Janet Dowie or Logan. So, not sure now.

You just caught me before I left - there's also a death for a Janet Dowie, aged 67 in St Cuthbert, Edinburgh in April 1854  :-\

Wonder if there are any MIs - no will for him though  :(

Quite a few trees around  for an Andrew Livingstone Dowie which fit the son b. Sicily. Died Portsmouth 1891

Spouse given as Elizabeth Roberts. Married Portsmouth 1850

The trees record a sister, Ann (1816-1884), born Holland and died Portsmouth. Will - Probate April 1884, Winchester.

I wonder if the family moved South after Andrew snr's death  :-\

Yes, Ann (born Holland) and her husband George Loutten (various spellings) living with Andrew Dowie (born Sicily) in 1881 Portsea census according to A/try transcription - Andrew's relationship to head of household described as 'brother in law' ...

Although ... ?red herring as 1838 marriage between Ann Roberts (?maiden name) and George Loatten, Alverstoke Hants
1841 Portsea census (transcriptions from A/try) Ann and George Loughton, both 25, living with Ann Roberts, aged 55
1851 Portsea census, Ann (born France) and George Lonker (A/try transcription), both 35, living with Ann Roberts, aged 65, mother in law
1861 Portsea census, Ann (born France) and George Loutten
1871 Portsea census, Ann (born France) and George Loutten
Ann died 1884 Portsea

One tree on A/try has Ann Roberts, daughter of Edward Roberts and Ann Hunt ... no mention of a Dowie so perhaps a red herring that this Ann was a daughter of Andrew Dowie (d. 1848) ... more likely Ann was a sister of Elizabeth Roberts than the Dowies
