MUIR family - Kimbolton /Leominster c1820
« on: Thursday 29 November 12 09:31 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

I am researching the family of John & Mary MUIR - doubtless of Scottish origin - who appear to have lived in the area of Kimbolton and Leominster around 1815 - 1826.

I have so far found 4 children:
Ann MUIR baptised 1817 in Kimbolton
Richard MUIR born Kimbolton 1818, baptised 1820
Mary MUIR baptised Leominster 1823
Elizabeth MUIR baptised Leominster 1826

If anyone has access to Parish Records or Bishop's Transcripts for the above, or alternatively, can point me in the right direction if information can be found on the web, I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance for any help on this one,

Nick

I'm sure you will know some of the following points but it might help:

John Muir born 1762 was buried Leominster 26 Apr 1826 & daughter Ann born 1817 buried 1820 Middleton on Hill. No trace of Mary senior.

In 1841 Daughter Mary a servant in Laysters.

1851 Richard, a Gold & Silver Engraver, wife Sarah 29, Richard 6 & George 1 are at 13 John St Marylebone.

1851 Eliza, presume Elizabeth, unmarried, is with her cousin Elizabeth Allford, a Landed Proprietor in Tenbury, Worcs.

Thank you Colin,

Your information has been of great help. I had, in fact, been working backwards from Richard MUIR, and have just found him already in Marylebone in the 1841 Census.

In the records to which you have access, is there any indication of where John MUIR might have been born by any chance ?

Is there a trace of a marriage between John & Mary in either of the two parishes mentioned do you know ?

I take it that Middleton on Hill and Laysters are in Herefordshire ?

Once again, many thanks for your time and trouble. Greatly appreciated.

Nick

Hi Nick,
The information sent was from find my past, the two parishes mentioned were in Hereford.
No record of where John was born and I am it bit bothered by the birth year of 1762, he would be between 55 & 64 when the children were born?
However if the transcript is correct and he was born about 1762 I think it is most likely that he was born in Scotland, along with at least 10 others around that time.

Unless of course the John that died in 1826 was his father?

In that case John junior may have been born later and there are a few possibilities in England 1780-1800, father John.
Check family search and you will see what I mean.

Good evening,

I tend to agree with your comments - the 1762 birth bothered me too. As you correctly point out, there is a large number of John MUIR's born around the same date, which makes identifying the right one virtually impossible.

I've already had a look at family search and trawelled the IGI Batch Numbers, but with no more info than we already have. I may have to put this one on a back-burner and come back to it later !

Thanks once again for your time and interest. Much appreciated.

Regards,

Nick

Hi Nick,
Just a thought the marriage of Richard was post 1837, that would give some detail on his parents.

Hallo Colin,

You are quite right, although experience shows that the two main details would probably be restricted to John MUIR's occupation, and whether he was alive or deceased.

In any case, it would be worth, I think, trying for a look-up in the LMA records, as Richard's marriage was at St. James, Westminster in 1845.

Many thanks for your on-going interest.
