Mulgrew/Milgrew
« on: Thursday 29 November 12 13:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out more about the following couple:

Thomas Mulgrew/Milgrew (born c.1860, Ireland & died 1944, Scotland) and Sarah McKay/McCoy (born c.1857 possibly Ireland & died 1955 Scotland) - their names changed in certificates which I take it was due to their accents??

They were married in Lisburn in 1886 and then appeared to immediately move to Glasgow, Scotland.  I have quite a lot of information about them and their 15 children (one of whom was my Maternal Grandfather) in Scotland but I'm now looking to work back and find out more about their life in Ireland.  Thomas was originally working in the shipyards in Govan but suddenly became a dealer and shop owner and I wondered how he managed that and wondered if he inherited money from Ireland.  I had a look at the Will calendars online but couldn't see any that fitted.  I've also had a look at the Irish 1901 and 1911 and noted that pretty much all Mulgrews in Ireland appeared to be Roman Catholic, however, this couple were staunchly Presbyterian so that may make family easier to find??

Is the first step to order marriage certificate from the Irish GRO?  Are there any other sites I could be looking at for more information?  All my research so far has been in Scotland so forgive me if I'm a bit slow.

I also have a post on the General Scotland section from some time ago for any information about them and the children in Scotland.

Many thanks,
Caroline

Thanks Kingskerswell.

Can I ask where/what website you got that information from (as it may help me with further research)?

Thomas Mulgrew's father James was a carpenter and Sarah McCoy's father Henry was a signalman.  Note that while Sarah was from Lisburn,  Thomas' address at the time of their marriage in Lisburn Cathedral Church of Ireland in 1886 was Glasgow.

There is an Alice McCoy who got married in 1893 whose father was Henry McCoy a railway porter in Lisburn ChristChurch Church of Ireland.  Alice was born in Lisburn in 1866 to father Henry and mother Alice Bannister, as was a brother James (details on familysearch) - given the combination of the name Henry McCoy, the occupation and location, there is just a possibility that Henry McCoy / Alice Bannister are Sarah's parents, certainly worth parking for the moment until you can rule it in or out.

Hi there,

Thanks for that info!

I have also had a look on the 1901 Census and I have found a James Mulgrew aged 58 years in Tomb St/St Anne's/Antrim who is Church of Ireland (which ties in with marriage of Thomas & Sarah in Lisburn Cathedral which I have now found out) and is a Carpenter.  There is one other James aged 51 years in Hanover St/Court/Antrim who is listed as a Joiner and is Presbyterian.  All the other James of a suitable age are all RC.  Although, of course, he could have passed away by this Census.  The first James' wife on this Census is an Alice but she appears to be a second wife as the details state that there are 5 children from the 19 yr marriage but there are other older children listed and would mean that, if this is the correct family, Thomas would possibly be the son of the first wife.  The other thing is that Thomas and Sarah's first child was Alice and their next 2 were a set of twins, James and Thomas, so that looks like the start of the  "Scottish" naming pattern?  But Henry wasn't born until child No 14!

Also, in all the Scottish Census, Thomas is listed as born in Ireland so I'm thinking that he was maybe just living in Glasgow as his usual residence at the time of the marriage?

I am going to e-mail the Cathedral to see if they can look up their registers just to see if they can give me any more information abut the family, perhaps not, but worth a try?

Thanks again,

Caroline
