Jockey
« on: Friday 30 November 12 02:27 GMT (UK) »
my GGF Patt Cotter (about 1857) is said to have been a jockey, in Ireland, I suppose.  I have checked out all the rootschat messages on horseracing, and have contacted the Jockey Club and some sporting newspapers, to no avail.

My question is:  In the US most daily papers have the race results in them.  Those results generally mention the losing jockeys as well as the winner.  I've gone to the free part of some Irish papers, and they claim to have articles about a Patt Cotter, not necessarily mine.  The subscriptions are very expensive.  If I were to subscribe, and the Cotter was my Cotter, would I be given a list of the horses and all the jockeys? Or just the winners?

Since none of Patt's sons went into horses in any way, it makes me think he wasn't very successful, so I have a feeling that he won't be pictured in the winner's circle!

Hi,
Your GGF may have worked with horses without actually having ridden them in races; another word with similar connotaions is 'groom'.
                  Best of luck.

Of course.  Or, he could have once raced a borrowed horse in some local event.  Heck, I had show jumpers, and raced them against my friends on occasion!

Except that my GM was the sort who downplayed people instead of exhalting them. Which makes me think he maybe was an actual jockey.

I've got membership of the British Library to view the online newspapers and unfortunately there's no mention of your jockey either as "Cotter" or Cottar" - initially I was quite hopeful because I got several "hits" but they all referred to people living in cotters/cottars.

Coincidentally I was searching through the newspaper archive a few days ago for an ancestral surname and the several hits I had were for the owner of winning horses, there were no jockey names only the horses names.
