LMA Look up Please
« on: Friday 30 November 12 10:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am hoping some kind soul will help with a lookup at the LMA as I live in Australia and am unable to get there myself. It is a removal order and appeal for Ann Puplett and her six children from St Mary Whitechapel to St Katherine Coleman. Reference code: MJ/SP/1846/07/047. From Collection MIDDLESEX SESSIONS OF THE PEACE: COURT IN SESSION
The origins of the Justices of the Peace lie in the temporary appointments of 'conservators' or 'keepers' of the peace made at various times of unrest between the late twelfth century and the fourteenth century. In 1361 the &#... Date: 1846 Apr 23-Jul. I know Ann's husband Henry died in 1846, I have been unable to find either of them in 1841 (the three youngest children are in the Workhouse then, no sign of the older three). I have found various mentions of Henry in the newspapers, as a smuggler ( he was a waterman/lighter man) and also named as the father of Ann's sistes, Sarah, child! But beyond that, his baptism and death, he is a ghost. I am hoping that the removal order could shed some light.
I realise I am asking a lot, but would be very grateful if someone could help in any way.
With fingers crossed, Jo  :)

Hi Jo

There are very few Rootschatters who go to the LMA(or Kew) although you may be lucky, but I think I'd email them and ask how much they would charge to do a look up themselves.

If it's not too expensive, and you agree, they'll let you pay by credit or debit card.

Good luck

Carol

Thanks Carol, I did look at their research option and 50 pounds an hour (about $100 Aus dollars) is out of my price range. I can keep hoping for a Lotto win to pay for a trip to to London and enable me to "hole up" at the LMA, National Archives, etc for a couple of months, but I don't really like my chances. Thank you though for your quick response.

Kind Regards, Jo

I very much doubt it will take them an hour to find it.
You've already got all the details of the date and place etc.

I'm sure they charge by the 15 mins too?

No harm in emailing to ask for a quote.

I emailed the Westminster Archives about 3 years ago, I knew the date of an inquest of my ancestor, and in which paper it was. They found it,emailed me back and said they would copy it (and post it to me) for £ 2 !!!

If you don't ask you don't get ( that's what I always told my sons  ;D )

Thanks Carol,

I took it to be a minimum amount but as you say, it can't hurt to ask!

hello jo,

sorry for prolonging the agony, you know how it is, the best laid plans of mice & men, etc.

the document does not shed light on henry, it deals soley with ann and the children (it does give their name's and age's, don't know if that helps fill any gaps).

you mention that you have other info on henry (as a lighterman for instance) (some details of lightermen are available here at the guildhall library) and his death. perhaps if you provide those details further progress might be made.

pm your e-mail to me and i will forward the images of the document.
