Hi Pincard
http://london1864.com/stanford39b.htm
Scroll down to the green bit of St Ann's Church; follow down West India Dock Road and West Street runs off it to the north.
Rugg Street is marked, and you can find that on a modern-day map. West Street would have been roughly where Birchfield Street now runs.

Thank you for that info. Why can't I find it on the 1871 census any ideas?

Hi
Not sure, but by 1886 it was already called Birchfield Street; have you tried using that street name in 1871? :

If you can find Rugg Street, Caster Street, Penny Fields, Marant Street, Oriental Street etc in the 1871 Census, you may be able to find West Street or its equivalent.

I have seached for West Street in 1871 addess search but nothing comes up. However it does in 1881 so maybe the documents are missing for then.

Can you find Caster Street in 1871 and "walk" around the area via the census page images? Or look at the enumerator's route pages (I think you can do that on Ancestry) ? Perhaps West Street was being re-built in 1871? Or, as you say, the pages may be missing.

Hi
There is a West Street in the civil parish of St Ann Limehouse, registration district Stepney, Middlesex, showing up on FindMyPast. My sub has lapsed so I can't view the names, images etc. Funnily enough, Rugg Street is indexed as St Ann
e
Limehouse, Stepney
So try West Street, Stepney.
Added: not sure why the "e" has dropped!
