Property of George Frederick Taylor - Well St, Hackney
« on: Saturday 01 December 12 17:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello:  :-*

At the time of his death and per his will, my GGG Grandfather George Frederick Taylor owned the properties listed below:

FREEHOLD

100, 102, 105, 107, 109, 111, 115, 117, 119, 121 Well St

St John's Place (later Priory Place), St John's Gardens, St Johns Sq, (no house numbers listed so I assume he owned everything at these locations)

42 Loddiges Rd

LEASEHOLD

149 well St,

23 Bentham Rd

15 & 17 Chatham Place, formerly 4 & 5 Paradise Terrace

45, 47, 49, 51 Devonshire Road ., Mare St

In addition, he may have at some point owned 126 Well Street(where he lived for over 50 years and his son after his death) and 4 Mellville Place.

I am trying to figure out the simplest way of checking who the residents were at those locations for the 1841-1891 censuses. My goal to find if there were Taylor's at those addresses who may have been family other than my direct line, ie cousins etc...

As far as I know, the censuses were not sorted by address, so I'm hoping for some ideas other than literally checking every Taylor and then checking their addresses.

Thanks
David

You can search by address on findmypast and Ancestry, the latter is a bit hit & miss but just put the street name into the 'keyword' on the census search.

Rosie  :)

I don't complete anything on the Ancestry Census search other than 'keyword' where I put street name. Having located one property in the road then I am afraid that it will be a case of selecting that record to view then browsing the adjacent pages.

Thanks Rosie.. You've come through once again! Seems findmypast is a bit spotty.. I searched for well street on 1881 and it only gave me #79.. but better than nothing.. I'll check Ancestry as well. I look forward to seeing if you find anything on that email I sent you!

 :D Rosie!

hate to be a pest.. But I think I just burned out the few brain cells I have left.. How can I search ancestry for address? I see where I can pick district and enumeration dist etc.. But It only pulls up the original documents which in some cases is 40 pages of sloppy faded handwriting. and I'm not sure exactly what EDs some of these addresses would fall under.. If that's my only option, I'll try and weed through the handwriting, but wanted to make sure I was looking in the correct place first.. THANKS!  ;D

Hi

Your Archives Historical Streets Project will give you the piece numbers for the streets on the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1891 censuses and the house numbers if they were numbered on the censuses which they weren't always particularly on the 1841 census.

So, If I find a marking of RG 9/158 folio 75-80 and then Ancestry asks me for "piece", "folio", "Page" and "keyword"

I got the folio part, but what would the piece and page number be? I think i've tried all combinations and gotten no info

RG9 is the 1861
Piece 158
Folio 75
Page 80
No need to complete Keyword it will work without it
That reference doesn't work  :-\  Leave off the page 80 then it will.

When you eventually look at the original image the public record office reference alongside gives the ref RG9/158 - On the top  in thick black print is the folio number the page number is also in that area.  If there is no thick black number click back a page which will then give you the number (each folio covers 2 pages)

Hope this is what you are after.
