RM4 merging people query

I merged 2 data bases (having found the missing link) I did an automatic people merge & then a manual merge to tidy things up.  But, I have a couple of names that haven't merged.  On the manual merge window both primary & duplicate person are exactly the same.  I tried to make the duplicate person different by deleting a small piece of information but it changed on BOTH primary & duplicate & when I try to merge them it tells me I can't merge two persons that are the same.  So, it would seem that I have two people on my name index with exactly the same details & are syncing together when ever I add or delete information 
What would be the answer to this problem?  Can I just delete one of them, hopefully without catastrophic consequences

Although I've been using RootsMagic for a number of years, I haven't done much merging so can't answer from personal experience. However, there's often an answer to this kind of thing on the RM user forums - I would suggest the RM4 Discussion one at http://forums.rootsmagic.com/index.php?/forum/16-discussion/

Thanks Arthur,
I had done a quick look through the RM forum & came up with a few threads that gave me a few pointers but I'll check-out your specific ones.
This is the first time I've merged data bases or used the 'merge' tool so I'm still trying to figure things out
