I would like to find his parents and spouse.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Hello Claire,
I'm working backwards with this man.  I have just got four Master Mariner Certificates and three I have put into their families but William Thomas I cannot place.  If his father is Lancelot he was born 8 years before his parents married.
The marriage to Ann Oddy would have made him 53 years old,  so there could have been an earlier marriage.

The Certificate states date of birth as 11th April, 1814, born Willington, Durham, England.  His occupation was that of Carpenter & Ships Mate.  He served 18 years in British Merchant Service dated 18th November, 1851.
The other Certificate I have is for Alfred Cannute Swinfen Couper born 1821 Willington, Durham.  He is the son of Lancelot and Hannah Farrow.
So it looks like this does confirm he is the son of Lancelot and Hannah.

Thanks Claire,
That fits better now.  I would never have looked in Yorkshire as all the Coupers centred themselves in Durham.

I'll work on this now happy to know I have found the right parents.
Thanks for all your help,
Gumball
