Huntingdonshire Marriage Lookup MARTIN/FLINT
« on: Wednesday 01 June 05 06:15 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

my ancestor's (Richard MARTIN b. ) shipping records state that his parents were John MARTIN & Frances FLINT of Bury, Huntingdonshire. I have been able to identify their other children (first born 1828), but have not found a marriage for them.

There don't seem to be any FLINTs at Bury. Some of the children were baptised at Spaldwick.

This marriage would be briliant as I have not been able to go back further than this.

Cheers,
Donna.

Hi Donna,

I've looked this couple up in the Huntingdonshire Marriage Index 1754-1837 and they are not in there.  I guess they must have got married somewhere else?
There is only one marriage with those surnames and that is in 1824, between Mary Flint and Wm Martin of Lt Raveley, they were married at Gt Staughton, Ruth

Hi Ruth,

thank you so much for taking the time to look for the marriage for me. I'm not completely surprised you didn't find it as the FLINTs don't seem to be from Bury, so I imagine the marriage could have taken place in Frances' home parish. Hmm ... to try to track her down now!

Cheers,
Donna

Hi Donna

Have you found them in the 1851 census, which should give birthplaces, which may be an indication of where they were married?
In 1841 the family was in Bury, John 42 farmer, Francis 35, Ann 13, Francis 4 (fem), George 6, William 2, Mary 7 days. All born in Hunts. I couldn't see any Flints in either Bury or Spaldwick.

I can't see any of them in 1861 - did the whole family emigrate? But there are deaths on FreeBMD in the mid 1850s of a John Martin and Frances Martin in St Ives registration district  which includes Bury, so they may have been dead by 1861.

Hunts is not well covered on the IGI but what Flints there are seem to be concentrated in Godmanchester (although this may just be a reflection of the parishes that have been transcribed).

If you haven't found them in 1851 try a specific look up request on this board, or check out the Hunts look up exchange (Hunts 1851 has not been released on CDrom, so you are reliant on someone having the Hunts FHS produced transcript for Bury).

Just a final thought - there seems to be a gap between Ann born 1828 and George 1835 - could Frances have been John's second wife, which would put the marriage 1834/5?

Regards

David

Hi David,

thank you for your assistance. It is certainly appreciated.

The family is presented as below in the 1851 Census:

John MARTIN     h m 54 farmer 170ac/6labs       born Bury
Fanny           w m 47  --                      "       "
Anne            d u 22  --                      "       "
George          s u 17  -- at home farrmer's son "      "
Mary            d u 10 scholar at home          "       "
Richard         s    8  "       "               "       "
Jeminah BROWN   sv u 20 kitchen girl            born Ramsey HUN
Sally SAMMONS   sv u 18 house maid              born Wistow

There don't seem to be any other FLINTs around Bury in 1852 though. Shedding a slight doubt on Frances' place of birth.

The only family member I know of to emigrate was my Richard.

The Bury, Holy Cross Parish Registers show John's death in 1855. Frances' death was in 1882 listed as Huntingdon.

Your comment about Frances possibly being John's second wife may account for her birth place being listed as Bury, even though there seem to be no FLINTs there. Perhaps she had another maiden name.

Lots to look in to!

Cheers,
Donna.

Hi Donna

This may just be coincidence....

the death in 1882 in Huntingdon to which you refer is Frances Elizabeth Martin, per FreeBMD

the IGI shows a marriage of Frances Elizabeth Flint to John Martin on 18 Oct 1827 at St Leonards, Shoreditch London.

John Martin and Frances had a daughter Ann in Shoreditch born 4 Sept 1827, christened 5 Oct 1827.
Both of these are controlled extracts, not wishful thinking member submissions.
There were no other christenings of children of John and Francis in Shoreditch St Leonard up to the end of 1835.

The marriage date looks right, the birth of Ann matches her 1841 age, but what a farmer from Hunts was doing in Shoreditch I couldn't hazard a guess, but they do seem to have put the cart before the horse, in farming terminology, in that the christening of Ann took place before their wedding.

Of course it might be a complete red herring, but I would be tempted to pop along to my local LDS FHC and order film numbers 396236 (baptism) and 405107 (marriage) and see if there's any reference to Hunts!

But I still don't understand why I can't find Frances from 1861 onwards!

Regards

David

Hi David,

thank you once again! The IGI marriage in 1827 does look very tempting. As I have recently moved to an area that does have an accessible LDS library I think I will take your advice & order in the films. Perhaps there will be some reference to Hunts.

I have purchased John MARTIN's will & about to attempt to decipher it. What a mess :) I may glean some additional info there too.

Frances is certainly being a little elusive!

Cheers,
Donna.
