The founder of the firm seems to be Lorentz Herman Gullachsen born abt 1846, Bergen, Norway. He died 30th August 1912, at 16 Percy Gardens, Newcastle Tynemouth, he left £17,364 13s 10d. Probate was granted to his widow Annie Gullachsen, and his son Lorentz Willoughby Gullachsen. He had seven children.
The firm originally was "Carnegie and Gullachsen". In an 1883 catalogue for an exhibition in Gateshead the firm was advertising drawing room suites from between 17 and 40 guineas, and dining room suites from £18 to £40. In the 1879 The Commercial Directory and Shippers Guide, Carnegie and Gullachsen, were at 58 Northumberland Street, Newcastle. In the 1890 Directory they are two separate firms.
