BOWLES of Benenden
« on: Friday 07 December 12 11:05 GMT (UK) »
Bowles is a big family across Kent as anyone researching them will know.
After intensive scrutiny of a direct ancestor - Hannah Bowles born about 1731 in Walmer who married Richard Dawes in Deal and lived out her life there... I have a plea (2 questions below) to help trace her parents.
Most likely candidates seem to be William and Hannah Bowles of Benenden in Kent. (possible siblings James and Bridget)
However they later moved to Tenterden and were married in Ripple.
So, would anyone with a knowledge of this area and time, have a clue why there might be so much moving around?

The big question:  Is anyone researching any Bowles of Benenden at all?
Thank you. Any help much appreciated.   Ankaret.

Don't you think the William and Hannah BOWLES who were having children in Tenterden (1719+) and then possibly Benenden were most likely the William BOULES and Hannah FREEBODY who married 1718 Tenterden http://www.familysearch.org ???

Personally, I would probably concentrate around the Deal area for the baptism of Hannah BOWLES who married Richard DAWES before venturing as far west as Tenterden and Benenden.  Can you confirm her age/approximate birth year from any source?  Have you sighted the marriage entry for Richard and Hannah to see whether there is any useful info there ie. marital status/residence/names of witnesses?

Thank you for your direction.

I have this week successfully found the marriage entry in the parish records for Richard Dawes and Hannah Bowles. 1755.  I have a question.  Half the marriages on the page are marriages by Banns and half by Licence.
What does this mean?  Ankaret.

Marriage was generally by banns (banns being called in the parish of each party to be married for three successive weeks as is the norm today).  Licences allowed marriages to take place quickly and without the banns being called locally ............. they were quite popular for the upper classes, minors, widows etc..  If you google ............... marriage by banns or licence you can find quite a few discussions etc. on the subject.

After previous comments and further research I would like to raise a new subject for Bowles in Deal (instead of Bowles of Benenden).  Ankaret.
