Whilst searching for info about my great grandfather, Michael King from Whitehaven,Cumberland, I noted in the 1881 census a Michael King in Shorncliff army camp in Kent. There was not a lot of detail on the form only a list of names of men, their age and birthplace, so I'm none the wiser as to whether it was him or not. I visited the public records office at Kew and they had no further information on the listed Michael King - no pay records, pension records, service records or even discharge details which, according to them, would indicate he may have bought himself out of the army. He wasn't killed as my great grandfather went on to live into his late 70s.
So was the listed Michael King a coincidence? If so then I'm back to trying to find out where my Michael King was in 1881.
Does anyone have any info for this period in time?
Can anyone advise me as to where to go next.
many thanks
