Glamorganshire canal boatmen
« on: Tuesday 11 December 12 21:44 GMT (UK) »
I have been researching the family NORMAN from the Nantgarw / Glyntaff / Rydyfelin areas. From the census returns it would appear that the majority of the men are boatmen, probably on the Glamoganshire Canal.

Does anyone have any good resources / info / pointers in the right direction on boatmen and the Glamorganshire Canal?? I believe that there are a couple of good books, The Glamorgan and Aberdare Canals (vols 1 and 2) but at £30 a pop I cannot justify these (even just before Christmas). Does anyone have a copy of these books and know if they have any specific information relating to the Norman family and / or the specific locality.

many thank in advance,
Heather

Many thanks for the link Morgan. Lots of interesting photos. Particularly interested in the one of the lock keepers cottage at Dynea Lock. Rees Norman was enumerated in teh 1851 census a couple of houses down from the cottage, at Dufryn.

Have sussed out how to obtain a copy of "The Glamorganshire & Aberdare Canals". I live near the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port, and they have a copy in their archives. A visit will be due in the new year.

Thanks again Morgan,

Heather
