Hi

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/5.  Prior to then, many births went unregistered

West Hanningfield came under the Chelmsford registration district for that period

According to the 1869 marriage cert - his father was also James - occ sawyer

From freebmd

Births March qtr 1840

Brown  James    Chelmsford  12 45

Births September qtr 1841

Brown  James     Chelmsford  12 42

This appears to be the family in West Hanningfield in 1841 which lets out the 1841 birth above

All born Essex

James Brown 30 sawyer
Mary   27
Mary   5
James   1
Thomas   5 Months
HO107 Piece 325/18   no folio number shown   Page 3

If you are trying to establish his mothers maiden name - you may be better with a copy of his brother Thomas's birth cert

Births March qtr 1841

Thomas Brown  Chelmsford  12 53

Hi Carole

I have both of those birth certs the one in the march quarter is a dec birth so it is not that one because that would make him 49 in 1887 and i know he died aged 48 1889. The sept quarter one say's he was born in  little waltham but census say's west hanningfield and mothers name was eliza not elizabeth. Im a bit confused!!!

His baptism is on SEAX - bp.17/3/1840 West Hanningfield, son of James Brown and Mary Ann (formerly Cox).

So mother not Eliza or Elizabeth.

Hi Annette

I Have birth cert for james brown mother mary ann cox but the birth date is dec 1839 so if he died 1889 aged 48 that would make him 49

Hi

A couple of things to bear in mind re: ages.

Inaccuracies in ages on census entries, marriage and death certs was very commonplace.  My great grandfather was shown as 65 by his daughter who reported his death - he was actually 75.

You have to look at the actual date of his birth in relation to his age when he died  (eg) James b December 1839 would have been 49 in March 1889 so we are only looking at a 1yr inaccuracy

The info on a death cert is very much dependant on how well the person reporting the death knew him - and if that person did not have a copy of his birth cert .........

i see what you saying the probability is that his daughter who registered his death got wrong. Out all the 4 birth certs Ive ordered this the only one in west hannifield. Thank for all your help Annette and carole  :)
