Is anyone out there researching the Baker family in the East kent area, specifically around Deal/Ringwould?
For years now I've been trying to tie in the Matson family who were millers in the Deal and Walmer area in the late 1700s.
I have various links to other families but have so far failed to link the Matsons in this branch back to the main Matson line.
One of the links I'm hoping may help is the link the Matsons had to the Baker family and I wonder if anyone can help add to what i have?
I looked at my records for Baker and found some interesting possibilities -
1) Anne Maria Baker married George Alfred Matson June 1881 quarter in Yarmouth District. Although this was out of Kent, the father of George Alfred was George Matson born 21st April 1810 at Walmer and Christened at St. Mary's 23rd May 1810. His father was Thomas Matson christened 13th July 1785 at Walmer and a son of William Matson and Mary Hyder. So we have a Matson and Baker link to our family in Deal/Walmer.
2) I have a marriage of William Matson and Bennett Baker 18th Jan 1794 at Deal.
1794 18 Jan William MATSON, b otp to Bennett BAKER, X sp otp
Witnesses; Mark CLAYSON, Harriot CLAYSON
I don't know where this William Matson fits.
3) 1876 St. Mildred at Canterbury, John George Harlow married Helena Baker. The link to the Matson millers in Deal area is that John, George's grandfather, John Harlow knew William Matson - John Harlow's will of 1869 appointed William Matson (1802-1869) along with his son, John (Harlow), as executors of his estate. In the will he mentioned his dau, Mary and her husband William Matson (1829-1888), miller of Sturry.
4) Joanne Baker married Robert Tritton 5th October 1718 at Wickhambreux. A Mary Mockett married Thomas Tritton in 1697. The family link here is this marriage witness
Wm Matson of Deal baker bach & Mary Hyder of the s sp. 13 Oct 1781.
1781 14 Oct William MATSON, otp to Mary HYDER, otp by Licence.
Witnesses; Richard MOCKETT, Edward FOREMAN.
5) John Baker married Frances Matson 24th April 1827, Lee, Lewisham
6) Mary Baker, recorded as widow at time of marriage in 1836 to Thomas Matson in Gillingham, Kent.
So six Baker links to the Matson family.
Is it co-incidence that in trying to link up a Matson branch of millers and bakers in the Deal area, we've come to look at the Baker family?
A long shot, but I wonder if the Stephen Gibbon(s) who married Ann Matson kept a bakers shop?
Any Baker (in both senses) researchers out there?
