mckenna gravestone, forth chapel, co tyrone

my great great grandparents lived in shanco, near clogher/augher in co tyrone.

bernard mckenna was born in neighbouring county monaghan in 1842, but moved to tyrone in the 1860s and married a local girl brigid mcelroy in 1867. i know that.

bernard is still alive in 1901, as he is in the census in shanco, but is deceased by 1911.

im presuming they are buried in the forth chapel graveyard, because they married there and lived close by. i cannot find a gravestone however.

they had 5 children, 4 boys and a girl. one of the sons is my great grandfather patrick, who is buried in caledon co tyrone. but the other sons, john, mick and bernard didnt marry so may appear on the stone aswell.

anyone know of the gravestones existence?

As a general rule, most people didn't have either the money and/or inclination to erect headstones and of those that did put up a headstone many are now illegible or have been removed from the original plot.

there are gravestones older than 1900 in the graveyard there i know. but as you point out money was an issue. i suppose the parish records would have to be inspected?

It's usually only the Established Church (Church of Ireland) that kept burial registers.

There is a possibility that this entry in the PRONI Wills Index is your man:

Administration of the Estate of Bernard McKenna late of Shaneo County Tyrone Farmer who died 25 November 1909 granted at Armagh to Michael McKenna Farmer

Unfortunately the will hasn't been digitised online so you would need to order it if you wished...

Edited: Sorry, please disregard, I assumed when you said "deceased by 1911" that you didn't have any firmer details on his death but I see from other web references that you know this already.

i know he was deceased by 1911 but not the year. that is likely him in 1909 because he had a son bernard but he had no land and lived at home so likely the father passing land to the son.

Hello there I am very interested in this as John was my great grandad he was married to Jane mckenna and they had my grandad John leo mckenna. John died in 1918 in France in the 1st World War. Jane also died young of a broken hurt. They defo got married. My grandad died in 1984 but lovely to know more many thanks Ann Marie
