Stapley marriage
« on: Thursday 27 December 12 14:37 GMT (UK) »
I have been going through my 'archives' on the Stapleys of Sussex.  For a long time I have had a John Stapley born 1798 in Wadhurst to William and Mary Stapley.  I have followed John through the census up until his death in 1882.  He married a Lucy of Lewes c. 1825 - re the birth of their daughter Elizabeth c 1826 on the 1841 census.

The point of this is I do not know the maiden name of Lucy, only that she was born in Lewes.  She was buried in Wadhurst aged 78 on 3 May 1881.  Her age stays consistent throughout the census 1841-1881.
I do hope that some one can help. With very many thanks. Anna

As you will know, the rounding convention on the 1841 census will mean that Elizabeth's enumeration as aged 15 in 1841 means she could be anything from 15-19 inclusive.

Have you traced Elizabeth thereafter for a more accurate age?  She seems (as Elizabeth Stapely) to have married Henry Bishop (Uckfield Sep qtr 1843) and had a daughter Elizabeth Bishop who was baptised at Mayfield 6 Oct 1844, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth.  Six year old Elizabeth then appears with her grandparents in 1851: HO107/1639/414/1.

This may well be the daughter Elizabeth from their marriage.  I will bear it in mind, thank you.  There are many John Stapley's but Lucy's are few in number.  And I wonder why after her marriage!!  Yes the grandaughter Elizabeth Bishop is on the 1851 census with John and Lucy, but neither parents are there.

No I haven't traced the later movements of Elizabeth.  Really I would like to know Lucy's name before her marriage.  I have very many Stapley's and to follow them all would be a book in itself.

With thanks for looking into Elizabeth and Henry Bishop.  Anna

Yes I wondered about that one as it seems consistent with Elizabeth's age in 1851:

1851 census: HO107/1640/204/19

Henry Bishop Head Mar 28 Ag. labourer Mayfield
Elizabeth do Wife Mar 27 Mayfield
Henry do Son 4 Mayfield (baptised 8 Mar 1847 Mayfield)
Harriott do Daur 1 Mayfield (baptised as Harriet Bishop, 4 Nov 1849 Mayfield)

Thank you the two of you for your input.  I wonder why the eldest was farmed out?  Anna

Not sure what you mean by farmed out? She may just have been having what in the 21st century would be called a "sleepover" at Granny's on census night 1851.

I'm not sure that they had sleepovers in those days, I think that it was for economic reasons, or unless the mother couldn't cope with the many children they had then.

I have found the 1861 with Henry and daughter Harriett, but with a different wife.  So one assumes Elizabeth died between 1851 and 1861, and perhaps that is why the young Elizabeth was with her grandparents because her mother was ill.

One shouldn't be doing any speculating in family history; it really is taboo!!!
