I can just hear the dating people coming and saying:-

"it is really hard to judge from children's clothing because they didn't change much."
They will also say  "Please may we also see the back scanned!"   ;D ;D ;D ;D

But having said all that - I'm afraid I can't help you with a date!!  I doesn't look too  recent though does it!    :)

For the reason given above!

Yep.
Could be anytime from around 1870's-WW1.
I suspect it's earlier rather than later.

Thank you, I will look the photo out and scan the back if that will be of a help, but even the time scale you have given me is still of help, as I think the boy standing is my great grandfather and he was born in 1878, which is why I thought the photo could have been around 1890

As Wiggy and Jim have pointed out... :) children are hard to date. However the table and chair are kind of classic 1870s style studio props, so could well date from then. As for later, if the photographer wasn't up to date in his furnishings it could be later as we'll. Not very helpful I know...if you could scan the back it might give us a better idea.

Cheers,

This is the back the about 1890 I put on a while ago trying to work out when it may have been around,
I have tweaked it a little to bring out the stamp, also tried a search for the photographer on Google not a lot for it but I did find this   "I believe Miss Brass the photographer was Isabella Brass (born 1865) daughter of John Brass and Mary Thomison of Orphir. Isabella died in 1894. She was the sister in law of William Sinclair, draper inKirkwall.
on looking at the 1891 census for Orkney she is indeed there living with her brother in law William Sinclair occupation Photographer, if this is the right person hopefully this might narrow it down
Still looking at the site for Orkney

Thanks
Sybil

I found this on that same page so pretty sure the photographer was Isabella Brass
"There are several photographers listed in Palace Road (or Street as it was then more usually called - Palace Road, confusingly, was also used to refer to the Watergate) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their studio seems to have been in part of the building used by D M Kirkness the Orkney-chair maker. George Macgregor jr in 1893 refers to the photographic studio there belonging to "Miss Brass, a young lady of kindly business tact".
