Elizabeth Sanderson
« on: Friday 28 December 12 09:56 GMT (UK) »
I’m trying to locate the death of Elizabeth Sanderson, born circa 1822-3 in South Shields, Co Durham.  Her father was John Stephenson (pilot) and, at the time of her marriage to Charles Sanderson at Holy Trinity Church in South Shields in 1850, she was living in Westoe.  She was widowed in Northumberland in 1868 and the last reference I can find to her is in the 1871 census when she is living in Eldon Street, South Blyth, Northumberland.  I wondered if she might have later remarried and, therefore, died under a different surname but so far I haven’t been able to identify any matches that are likely to be her.  Can anyone help me trace Elizabeth?

Thanks, Mo.  This is really helpful.  Now I'll try searching her death as "Elizabeth Stamp"!

I haven't found Elizabeth but did find a possible date for Charles' death - Oct - Dec 1868 at Tynemouth.
I also found Mary Ann Sanderson, Elizabeth's daughter in 1881 in the Tynemouth Union Workhouse with a ten month old son, Frederick.

You're absolutely right about the death of Charles Sanderson and also Mary Ann living in the workhouse with Frederick.  I notice that mother and son both turn up in the workhouse in Selby ten years later...

There is also the death of an Elizabeth Stamp aged 48 in Tynemouth R.D. in the same quarter of 1871  :-\

I guess born Stephenson, married Sanderson and then Stamp.

Poss. death for her 1871 Tynemouth or 1872 Newcastle.  Appears to be no sign of her in 1881 census yet.  May explain the workhouse for her children then.
