Egham, Surrey - Directory of businesses / Shop search?
« on: Sunday 30 December 12 07:27 GMT (UK) »
Hello Everyone,

I have just found & joined the site and am excited, it looks a great source of information  :)

I have been searching for a while now for any information on my great grandfather, Francis Danby who was a Draper on Egham High Street from around 1870 until around 1919 when he died. He had sons who I think continued the business during the 20's. I've found him listed in Business Directories and the address is 17 and then 69 High Street.
If anyone has access to any old trade directories from that time, with photos or adverts or any info at all relating to shop as I'd love to be able to see. His wife Harriet was a milliner, so not sure if she would have done that at the same premises.
Any info or advise of where to look is greatly appreciated,
thanks

Hi danbypast

Welcome to rootschat  :)

It might be worthwhile contacting the museum in Egham

Hi
Not what you asked for but in the "Reading Mercury - Saturday 02 January 1875" it mentions that Francis Danby a carpenter of High St Egham identified the body of John Eden Danby aged 31 who was killed in a 'terrible railway accident' (34 killed 70 injured) near Oxford on Xmas eve.

Sheffield Daily Telegraph - Tuesday 29 December 1874 - this one F.D. says he is a carpenter and also has a small drapery business. There are a heap of reports in different papers.

Hello Rosie99 & Jonquill,

Wow, thank you for such quick replies! I will definitely take a look at the museum sites, hadn't thought of that.

Jonquill, all info MOST welcome, that is excellent, thank you (although it's not a very nice story) - Yes, I knew from Census details that he was originally a carpenter and John Eden was his brother so you are spot on there!  How do I access the newspapers, is there an online site?

Many thanks to you both,

Dee

I use this site for newspapers - you have to subscribe or buy credits. If you are in the UK (I'm not) you might be able to get this or something similar through your library. I'm sure someone else here can tell you what is available. http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/

You can also get some British papers if you have a subscription to find my past.

Thank you everyone, a quick update, I contacted the Egham Museum via email and had a very helpful answer back within an hour (on a Sunday!!! amazing service) also found a few newspapers online prior to your answer jonquil... I'm not in the UK either so reliant on anything I can find online and those sites should keep me busy for a while. :)

Oh you are an Aussie  :) In that case you can apply for a library card here to get free access to some of the UK papers. http://www.nla.gov.au/getalibrarycard/
