Doncaster Burials
« on: Tuesday 01 January 13 18:19 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know of any resources online or otherwise, for a burial in Doncaster. I'm looking for a John Westerby who died on 21 April 1837 and according to an internet site he was buried on 26 April 1837 in Doncaster but I don't know in which graveyard.

Hi, I recently had the same problem as yourself, the advice I was given was to ask at the local Library (Doncaster central library ) 01302-734314 to see if they have any newspaper obituary's for the date of burial, it could offer you some idea of the burial place.
I also contacted my local council and gave them the name and date of death of the person I was searching for, they did a search for me and rang me back with the cemetery location and plot number.
You never know your luck, you could get a result, best of luck with your search.

Hello again, there are 2 public member trees on Ancestry but neither of them show a source for death, Familysearch only shows the date and place of death.  :(

Doncaster FHS have transcribed Doncaster burials, they now appear on Findmypast. I can only see 2 Westerbys, Ann 1848 and William aged 80, 26 April 1837. He's a gentleman. Place just given as Doncaster, therefore I assume the Parish Church.

Might be worth contacting the FHS for clarification.

John Westerby was buried 0n 26/4/1837 in St Georges cemetery Doncaster. He is described as 'gentleman'This being the case I examined monumental inscriptions and no! there is no headstone.
Certain documents show his name as William;this may be a transcription error.
There is a John Westerby who married in Pontefract in 1777.
I hope this helps.
