Chandler family,Wexford.Can you help please.

I am tracing my family tree and could do with a little help! I can't get any further back than 1881, and can't find out anything from Ireland.

My Great, Great Grandparents are:

Thomas Chandler - Born in Wexford. At the time of the 1881 census lived in Liverpool aged 46 Occupation Shoemaker and married to:
Mary Chandler - Born in Wexford. At the time of the 1881 census lived in Liverpool aged 48

Can anyone help please?

You didn't mention years of birth for Thomas & Mary, but it would appear from the dates you've mentioned that they would have been born before the start of civil records in Ireland in 1864, so you would need to search for church records for any earlier details for them. You usually need to know a fairly detailed location to check parish records - ideally the towns, townlands or parishes where your Chandlers etc lived.

Do you know Mary's maiden name ?
A birth cert for one of their children born in England would show that...

The next step would a search for their marriage as a marriage cert in England should give details of their fathers ..

So it looks like Thomas and mary arrived in England between 1853 and 1857. Buying Johannah's birth cert would give you Mary's maiden name which would help in tracing their marriage in Ireland.

Certainly looks like a marriage in Ireland. If they were RC it would have been before civil records started.

The best way to try to find a more detailed place of birth is with the later census returns - particularly Edward, as he is the most recent member of the family born in Ireland.

Only two Chandler households listed on Griffith's valuation in Co. Wexford, although these particular returns are dated 1853, so might be a little after your Chandlers left Ireland - but might be relations..

Both are named Thomas, one in Courtoyle Old townland in Newbawn civil parish, the other in Growtown Upr Townlands in Coolstuff civil parish. The first holds about 7 acres, the second just over 20.

No wonder it took ages to find them. The surname is actually written on the image as Chaloner. I have put in a correction. Also Edward is down as born L/pool - enumerator error maybe?
