Hancock/Bendall/Shipp
« on: Sunday 06 January 13 19:34 GMT (UK) »
Hello..first time user sp please bear with me.  Looking for information on above families who lived in Swattham Bulbeck in Cambridgeshire .  Right now I am looking for parents of Sarah Hancock b. 1880.  Mother was Sarah Bendall b.1840 married John Hancock 1832 to 1875. The CAMDEX shows an entry for a Sarah Hancock and Sarah Bendall in 1880 and another entry in 1881 for Sarah A. Hancock.

As John Hancock died 5 years prior I suspect that my Sarah b. 1880 was perhaps the illegitimate child of one of the Bendall sisters and taken in by Sarah Hancock.  Can anyone look this up for me?

Hope this is the right place to ask this question ?  Thanks.    Kathie

Hi Kathie

Welcome to rootschat  :)

The GRO index only lists Sarah as Hancock. The 1881 registration for a Sarah A Hancock is in Ely reg district not Newmarket which covers Swaffham Bulbeck.

I think that the only way you are going to solve this is to purchase the 1880 birth certificate.  CAMDEX have probably taken other information from the birth registration, it may just be the mothers maiden name as Sarah was illegitimate.

Welcome to RootsChat from me, too! ;D

A tree on Ancestry (but no sources mentioned!) has Sarah's birth as 8th February 1880, if that's any help?
They have her death in Canada on 2ns December 1959?

I have the BMD's for Swaffham Bulbeck, and although there are lots of Hancock/Bendall/Ship/Shipp names on there going back to 1558, there is no Sarah Hancock b1880 on there. Where did you get your info from? You could also try FreeREG as there is quite a lot of info being gradually put on the site for Cambridge.
regards.

Where did you get your info from?

All of the census after Sarah's birth in 1880 give her place of birth as Swaffham Bulbeck. She is living there in 1881 & 1891 and after that she is a servant in London.  :)  Her 'mother' Sarah as per census was bn Bottisham.  ;D

Hello everyone....thanks for all your help and quick responses!  I have just talked to a relative here in Canada ande she said she did order the birth cert for Sara Hancock and it did not show the father's name.  So I assume the document on the CAMDEX shows the mother's name followed by the maiden name.  So I guess we'll never know.  This relative did mention that Sarah's mother worked in a house there so I will need to check that out.  I thought I might find some parish records but maybe Swaffum Bulbeck was too small to have a church.  One of the ancestry public trees shows that John Hancock had a first marriage to a Sarah Culverston but have not found that yet.  I'll have to put on my Miss Marple hat!  Kathie

If the birth certificate gave the mother as Sarah then I doubt we would prove otherwise. She was still of child bearing age.   I did consider the lodger as a possible father but he is probably too young and we shouldn't really make assumptions.  ;D

This link to Swaffham Bulbeck has some information. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CAM/SwaffhamBulbeck/index.html

Residents of S.B.that I have in my family also used the church in Swaffham Prior.  There is always the chance that Sarah christened her children in Bottisham as mothers sometimes returned to their home parishes for these occasions. At the moment I have not located a christening for Sarah (junior) anywhere else.
