william keane 1866

my great great grandfather WILLIAM KEANE  was born 28 october 1866 in Galway. Im presuming it was in Bullaun as the family appears there in 1901/1911.

Familysearch.org has his parents as PATRICK KEANE and MARY GOWLAN. rootsireland confirms a william born to these in 1866 but i cannot confirm a parish to go back any further.

hoping to see if william had siblings and where he would be buried.

The record you found on RootsIreland seems to be a Civil birth record rather than a baptism, it turns up for me under a free search on Dunmore (CP), which is sub-district of Tuam registration district. The record transcript should probaly show a townland and narrow down the correct location. A cert from the GRO would show the complete details.

William's birth is the only one showing up for this couple on extracted records.

There seems to be two townlands named Co. Galway, one in Kilmoylan civil parish in Tuam PLU, and the other in Bullaun civil parish in Loughrea PLU, but I dont see any Keanes at either on the census returns ?

what does the CP stand for? i presumed they would be under RC?

william and family are in gortcam in bullaun in 1901.

ah when you said Bullaun I presumed you meant the townland..

I dont know for sure what CP stands for on the RootsIreland system (maybe Civil Parish ?), but they are definitely civil records.

Did you get a transcript of the record ?

You can tell straight away when you see them as they have informant and father's occupation and informant (if they are complete transcripts), and the district/parish section is a sub-district, usually with the CP, rather than a recognizable parish name.

trying to find the name keane in griffiths...i always presumed they were from Bullaun, but obviously. obviously william moved there when he married because dunmore is a long way from bullaun.

what parishes would be close to dunmore?

Looking at the census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Bullaun/Gortcan/1386620/

there may be a marriage in Loughrea district 1894  Volume 4 pg 221
where a William Keane and Catherine Silvers have the same reference number. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYHB-S2K
You could send for the certificate http://www.groireland.ie/
It would fit with the age of the oldest child.
Presumably, William did have siblings as there is a niece Annie Keane with them in 1901.

Griffiths Valuation (abt 1850s) does not have Keane in Bullaun parish. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/bullaun.htm

Gortcam townland is in the area closer to Loughrea... so in that registration district, rather than Tuam. So doesn't seem to be the same area as that birth although it could possibly be close, as the two registration districts do have a common border.

Family Search has a birth for a Catherine Silver - Loughrea here.
The age would fit with Catherine in 1901.

The parents are James and Bridget.

There is a Bridget here who could be of an age to be the mother  - there is a Mary Teresa Keane aged 6 yrs (as with William and Catherine) but she is entered as niece - rather than grandaughter.

It may just be that the name Keane is quite popular in the area.

apparently patrick keane and mary gowlan are the parents of william keane. and they married in dunmore rc church in 1854.

however i cannot get a townland for either family as cannot access rootsireland due to a problem.

the name keane doesnt appear in dunmore in griffiths, but gowlan does.
