Hi, can anyone tell me if there is a way of finding out the names of parents on a birth certificate before ordering that certificate? The birth I am interested in is for 1880.

Have you tried familysearch.org They might have a baptism that would give his/her parents name.

I agree with anna S that's a way of narrowing it down if you can. Why don't you post details in case any of us have access to the relevant ones?

Thank you all for your replies. I am looking for the parents of Hannah Painter and the birth reference I have found is Dec quarter 1880. Stourbridge 6c 203. I think this is correct for the Hannah I am searching but would like to confirm that her father is George and mother possibly Matilda. I have used family search but no luck. Hannah was born in Pensnett, Staffordshire I think.

On Ancestry someone has her on their public tree, born 12 September 1880,and her father being George, but mother unknown.  She married Joseph Mason in 1903.  Is this her? or even is this public tree person you?

This is very worrying.George married an Amelia Emily Lloyd at Dudley in the Oct/Nov/Dec quarter of 1853.There is a death of an Amelia Emily Painter at Stourbridge in 1874.

It seems that you will have to 'bite the bullet' and order the birth certificate to get the parents of Hannah Painter.
