Marriage of William Smith to Annie ??????
« on: Saturday 12 January 13 08:03 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find a marriage of William Smith to an Annie.

William Smith migrated to a America in 1853.  He was born in Scotland in Athelstoneford in 1828.  William originally worked as a gardiner in Washington DC and then became the Superintendent of the Botanical Gardens.  He died in 6 July 1912 and is buried at the Rock Creek Cemetery.  I have the photos that are available online of this.

I have found William with his wife Annie in the 1870 US Census.  Annie is aged 28 years and there are 2 children, Lizzie (aged 7 years) and Alice (aged 5 years).  Wife Annie was born in England.

Anna M.  is with William in 1880 but the 2 girls are not with them.  From 1890 until his death in 1912 William is not listed on any of the Census data as living with Annie/Anna.   On the later census data (1900 and 1910) William states he is married and gives the number of years married so I'm not sure where his wife is.  It is interesting to note that on his headstone there is not mention of his wife and 2 children.

What I would like to try and find out is what was his wife's name, when they married and further details about the 2 girls.

This doesn't answer your question but here's an interesting article on William Smith.  I'm still looking for Mrs. Smith.

No luck so far on Mrs. Smith or the daughters.  You could try contacting the US Botanic Garden.  There is a contact facility at garden website.

Thank you for this Erato.  The picture of William is very good and the article looks very interesting.  I have just found a lengthy article in The Washington Times, July 7 1912.  Page 8.  The article gives quite a bit of history relating to William and his family.  The article mentions that his wife has been an invalid suffering from a mental disease, for more than 20 years, and has been in an institution in Baltimore during that time.  He leaves no children.
I just have to work out how to print the page.  Am having problems downloading this and saving to print in a size that is readable.

It seems that the wife and daughters all died before 1912.

"When Smith died at age 85 in 1912, he had no family or heirs"

Thank you Erato for finding these.  William was my husband's great grandmother's only uncle.  As a honeymoon present he paid for Charles Alexander Ritchie and his wife Agnes Jane Rennie to go from Scotland to America and then back home again in 1895.  When William died in 1912, nephew Charles made another trip to Washington.  I guess this was to tidy up his estate as his wife and children had died.

In the 1910 census, there is an Annie M. Smith, born abt. 1843 in England, resident in Baltimore, Maryland.  I do not have access to the scanned image so I can't tell if this is the correct individual.  Perhaps someone else could take a look.  If she was still alive in 1910, that would narrow down the date of her death and it might be worth looking at the Maryland death index which is available on line but not easily searchable for a surname like Smith.
