Herring family - Worksop
« on: Sunday 13 January 13 09:31 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out some information about a James Herring who was in Worksop in 1812. He was married to a Mary (?) I believe and they had at least one son George who was born in 1812 in Worksop. George - my gggrandfather, was transported to Australia in 1833 and at the time of his crime was a farmboy. His name was somehow changed to Herringe after his arrival here in Australia.

I don't have any more information unfortunately and I am not sure if James was born in Worksop or somewhere else.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks  :)

Hello.... :)

I have only been able to find this information about James and there isn't a baptism for him in the Nottinghamshire registers that have been transcribed so far and I haven't found a burial for him either.

Marriage - Worksop Priory (St Mary & St Cuthbert)
JAMES HERRING & MARY COTTON - 23rd Aug 1808

Baptism at Worksop Priory - parents James & Mary Herring
MARY born 17th Nov 1809 - bapt 17th Nov 1809
ANN born 21st Oct 1810 - bapt 29th Oct 1810
GEORGE born 13th Nov 1812 - bapt 13th Dec 1812
JOHN bapt 15th Jan 1815 - abode Norfolk St - occupation Gardener

Kind Regards

Sheila.

Hi Sheila,

Thank you! That is a lot more information than I have.  I don't know if they stayed in Worksop or where James was born.  But that is very helpful as far as George's siblings are concerned as well. I have since found that George committed his crime in Sheffield so am wondering if they moved there. The information you have provided is great thank you again.

Julie

Hi Julie.....

That's interesting regarding George committing the crime in Sheffield..... the are a couple of trees on Ancestry and they reckon that James Herring died in Rotherham.... may be another avenue to investigate? they say James married Mary Ann Colton.... if I get chance I will have a look at the marriage at Worksop just to confirm if the name is Cotton or Colton and if it gives any other clues.

Sheila.

Thanks Sheila,

Yes, he was charged with stealing a shirt ?? or several items of clothing from a William Derwent. This information was given to me by another rootschat member who found it in the below publication

ROTHERHAM SESSIONS .
The Sheffield Independent, and Yorkshire and Derbyshire Advertiser (Sheffield, England), Saturday, July 14, 1832; Issue 601

Being a farmboy William Derwent may have been the farmer he worked for...I think I will also try and follow up on this.

Rotherham may be another avenue to follow....thank you again

Julie
