1901 Census look up request Nottinghamshire/Mansfield.
« on: Friday 03 June 05 19:20 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could help me lookup my greatgrand dad (although technically step great grand dad, as he was the second husband...).

We think we was born in 1901, and are almost positive it was in Mansfield.  His name is Walter Baden Machin (although, we have seen it spelt as 'Badin' and 'Bodin').  His mother was Mary Ellen Machin, there is no name for his father though.
Nottingham/Derby - Alvey, Machin, Scott, Stevenson, Redfern, Lowe, Coupe, Bowler, Strutt, Miller
Worcestershire - Burrows, Smith, Machin, Hardman, Nash, Sanders/Saunders, Davis, Adams
Buckinghamshire - Burrows, Woodward, Adams
Ireland (Dublin/Malahide/Cork) - O'Driscoll, Henvy, Gallaghan

Hi,

No luck on the census but I've found the following on FreeBMD:

Births June Quarter 1900

Machin, Baden Walter

Mansfield, 7b 138

I've also found a possible marriage for Mary Ellen:

Marriages September Quarter 1897:

Machin, Joseph  and on the same page
Mary Ellen Gent

Mansfield 7b 132

Only thing is I've found Joseph & Mary Ellen in the 1901 census for South Normanton (Reg. district: Mansfield) and there's no sign of Walter.

Regards,

Allan

We've discovered on his wedding certificate to my great nan that his fathers name was either John Machin, George Machin or Charles Machin (the names have been scribbled/crossed out on quite a few occassions by the looks of it).  Would that help?

We've worked out that our Mary Ellen was possibly born around 1879.

Also, my nan Eva, married William Machin.  My nan always told my mother that William, and Walter were related in someway, cousins, or something like that.  On The marriage certificate, William had put his fathers name down as Walter Machin.  Could the two walters be related?  It's awfully confusing.

The Mary Ellen I found on the 1901 census was 29 so she was born in 1871 or 1872 - too old to be your Mary Ellen I think.  At least you can probably eliminate this one!  I'll see if I can find anything else and let you know.
