where is william woods 1891+

Hi,

This is a difficult ask because he could be anywhere(family all over), I have looked everywhere for over a year checked and recheck and I am now wondering if I can't see the wood for the trees 

William woods born somersham, Hunts. Mar 1849.
Up to 1871 this is where he was.
Between 71-81 his family move to hendon,middlesex.
1881 he is in wandsworth prison and now married. 

Don't know who to???

Can't see wedding death or on other census.

He does have family lots of family in the following areas
Chelsea
Battersea
Wandsworth

Hi Helen,

William's prison in 1881 may give you a clue.  What was he in for and how long?  Could he have sailed to new pastures (Australia). I have found another prison record in both 1864 (12m) and 1866 (18m) for a William Woods (may not be the same man).


In 22 Jun 1907 there is a William Woods sailing for Canada (Halifax) on the Carthaginian (birth given as 1849) traveling alone.


William and Woods are common names so tying this down might be a bit tricky.  Have you tracked his siblings to see if he showed up with them? (Martha/Mary & Richard).

Any details on those records?  He was definatley in Somersham at that time.
I will keep a note of that.

Yes I have tracked down all brothers and sisters and most cousins as well just a few to go but done the most obvious ones first.

I have no idea what he is in for or how long? I have tried all the online resours es I can think of.

I have had a look at migration records but they give little detail to really pin it down.
The same goes for American records only found his cousin because his name was unusual.

I Think it may have to go on hold until I can get to the records office in London and find his prison records. but I am a long way away, so I am making what is turning out to be quite a long list of things I want to look up when I get there.
