"Pettingdon" ???
« on: Friday 03 June 05 21:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I was given some family history info over the phone, and I thought they said someone was born in Pettingdon, Lincs in 1795 - but I can't find any trace of a place by that name !! I don't want to bother them as they are quite elderly !!

Any suggestions as to what they might have meant ?

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,

What was the name of the person?  Maybe they'd be traceable by name and birth year?  Let me know and I'll have a look...

Regards, Emma ;)

Hi Emma,

It was Ann Harrison, daughter of Francis & Fanny ! She married William Welch of Clifton, Notts, in 1818 or 1819 (it's down twice on IGI !!), in either North or South Clifton (depending on the date !!)

Cheers,
Chris

Can't find Ann at the moment, but what about 'Keddington'?
(I'm getting frustrated here as I work with Lincolnshire on a daily basis, but I can't think of anything!!)

How about-

ANN HARRISON
  Female
~~~~~~~~
 Christening:  18 MAY 1785   Skellingthorpe, Lincoln, England
~~~~~~~~
Parents:
  Father:  JOS. HARRISON  Family
  Mother:  FRANCES

I know ..... only the mother's name is right, but it's the right side of the county!  Of course, if she was still producing kids in the 1840s then it would seem to rule her out.

There is a Hannah Welsh, b.1793, Bennington Lincs living in Newark, Notts in 1861.  She has a son called John b.1838 Newark with her.

How about this one in the 1851 census? Thorney is also in the North Collingham sub-district of newark, and there is also a William Welch age 33 living in North Clifton if you'd like those details too. Be aware there is a Doddington near Lincoln and a Dry Doddington near Grantham (which is in the Newark area). However in this case I think the Lincoln Doddington more likely.

HO107 2136 118 11
Thorney
William Welch head mar 61 famer 200 acres employing 3 labs Notts Clifton
Ann wife 56 farmer's wife Lincs Doddington
Robert Welch son 27 farmers son Notts Wigsley??
John son 25 famers son Wigsley
Catherine dau 15 farmers dau Wigsley
plus servants

Image quite faint. pm me if you would like to seeit.

According to the Notts FHS marriage index (transcribed from parish records) the marriage is North Clifton 19/05/1818

No baptisms for this couple at North Clifton, which helps to confirm they moved out of the parish.

Hope this helps, Heather

Hi Emma & Heather,

Good grief - Do you ever sleep ?!!! I checked my posts before I went to bed last night, and when I check them this morning - mega response !!

The 1851 is the right family, I'm sure - William & Ann's son, William, is on IGI as Thornley, but he's given Wigsley in other censuses. I haven't got my files handy, as I was just passing the computer & thought I'd check, and I'm rather restricted on the mobility front, having broken my ankle five weeks ago !!

As Ann gives 'Doddington' as her birth place - how does that match with the entry Geoff had showing Skellingthorpe ? (Thanks Geoff !). I think that Ann is probably a bit old - when I come back past the computer, I will bring my files & give you the info I have !!

Cheers,
Chris
