Censuses - why are people missing?
« on: Thursday 17 January 13 22:54 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone with the experience/expertise help me with reasons why ancestors might be completely missing from a census?

I know that my gg grandmother from Llanerfyl was born in the 1850s , was married in 1877 and died in 1902. However, try as I can, however imaginitively I search for her, I can find no record of her on the 1861 census.

Are there established explanations for why a person (in this case a child) would have been completely omitted? Is it a known phenomenon - have you encountered it?  Perhaps there are stats which estimate how many people may have been unrecorded. I have seen the lists of missing districts but think it highly unlikely she would have been living in them.

Would be interested in your thoughts.

Thank you

Hi it could well be that her name/family are badly transcribed, what is her name year of birth etc and expected parents, and I am certain we will do our best to locate (If at all possible)!

Do you have the rest of her family or are they all missing?

If you have her family but not her, she may have been visiting relatives at the time of the census and got missed off because both parties thought the other would include her
Wainwright - Yorkshire
Whitney - Herefordshire
Watson -  Northamptonshire
Trant - Yorkshire
Helps - all
Needham - Derbyshire
Waterhouse - Derbyshire
Northing - all

As you don't give her name, I assume that it is Susannah Jones/Rowland(s). In 1861, this might be the family that William found (previous post) :

1861 RG9/4259/97/16
Penfoel, Penrhos, Cyniwyll

Evan Rowlands, 52, ag lab, b. Llanfair
Susannah, w, 40, b. Llangadfaen
Susannah, d, 9
Mary, d, 7
John, s, 4
Jessy, d, 1
Richard, s, 1 mth
All children b. Llanerfyl
